Sally Gunnell OBE ( Sally Janet Jane Gunnell ; born July 29, 1966 in Chigwell , Essex ) is a former British athlete and Olympic champion .

Gunnell started her athletic career as a long jumper and pentathlete before she switched to sprinting and hurdling. Her international sporting career began in 1986 with a first place in 13.29 s in the 100-meter hurdles at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh , where she started for England . At the European Indoor Championships of the IAAF in 1989 she won gold in the 400-meter run and in 1989 at the European Cup she was second. At the Commonwealth Games in 1990 she won silver in the 100 meter hurdles in 13.12 s and gold in the 400 meter hurdles in 55.38 s. At the 1991 World Championships she won silver in 53.16 s over 400 meter hurdles and won the European Cup in this discipline.

At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, ​​she won the gold medal in the 400 meter hurdles in 53.23 s in front of the two Americans Sandra Farmer-Patrick (silver) and Janeene Vickers (bronze) as well as an Olympic bronze medal with the team in the 4- 400-meter relay with teammates Phylis Smith , Sandra Douglas and Jennifer Stoute .

In 1993 she was twice victorious in the 400 meter hurdles: at the European Cup and with a world record of 52.74 seconds at the World Championships in Stuttgart . As a result, Gunnel was voted Europe's Athlete of the Year and World Athlete of the Year . In 1994 she was victorious in the 400 meter hurdles five times, namely at the European Championships in Helsinki in 53.33 s, the Commonwealth Games in Victoria in 54.51 s, the Goodwill Games , the World Cup and the European Cup.

Gunnell is the only woman who has held the European, World, Commonwealth Games and Olympic records for the 400 meter hurdles at the same time. Today she works as a TV presenter for the BBC , is married and has two children.
