The World Athletics Athlete of the Year has been recognized by the World Athletics Federation since 1988. In 2012, the title was endowed with prize money of 100,000 dollars or 77,500 euros.

The sprinter Usain Bolt was awarded six times, the middle and long distance runner Hicham El Guerrouj and the pole vaulter Jelena Issinbajewa three times each. The athlete of the year 2000 was initially Marion Jones ( USA ), but the title was revoked because of doping.

At the award ceremonies for world athletes, two young talents are also honored as “Rising Star” ( German “climber of the year”), for example in 2010 and 2011 the German javelin throwers Till Wöschler and Christin Hussong . The IAAF occasionally awards further honors, such as in 2012 for David Rudisha's 800 meter world record as “Achievement of the Year” and for Glen Mills' “Lifetime Achievement” as coach Usain Bolts.
