Ashton Eaton (born January 21, 1988 in Portland , Oregon ) is a retired American athlete . He held the world record in the decathlon from 2012 to 2018 and is the current world record holder in the heptathlon held in indoor competitions . As an outstanding runner and jumper in the history of the all-around competition, he was able to more than make up for his average performance in the throwing disciplines.

Life

Eaton studied psychology at the University of Oregon at Eugene from 2006 to 2010 . In 2008 he was NCAA -Master in the decathlon, but missed fifth of the US knockouts qualifying for the Olympic Games in Beijing . The following year he won the NCAA indoor championships in the heptathlon and successfully defended his outdoor title. At the US championships he was second behind Trey Hardee . A short time later, however, he only finished 18th in the decathlon at the World Championships in Berlin , while Hardee won the gold medal.

In 2010 Eaton improved the heptathlon world record of compatriot Dan O'Brien by 23 to 6499 points at the NCAA indoor championships . With personal bests in four individual disciplines, he increased this mark in 2011 in Tallinn to 6568 points. In the same year he won the US championships in the decathlon with 8729 points and exceeded his previous best by 272 points. At the 2011 World Championships in Daegu , he won the silver medal behind defending champion Trey Hardee with 8505 points.

At the World Indoor Championships in 2012 in Istanbul , Eaton won the heptathlon title with 6645 points, increasing his world record by 77 points. His lead of 574 points over the second-placed Ukrainian Oleksij Kasyanow was the largest in the history of the World Indoor Championships and his long jump performance of 8.16 m was the best in a heptathlon.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , Eaton safely won the gold medal with 8869 points. Over 100 meters and 400 meters as well as in the long jump he achieved the best performance of all participants; in the javelin throw he set a new personal best. 2013 he was at the World Championships in Moscow with 8809 points for the first time world champion .

At the 2014 World Indoor Championships in Sopot , Eaton defended his heptathlon title with 6303 points. As announced in February, he then focused on the 400-meter hurdle distance . On April 19, he made his official debut over the track in Walnut with 50.01 seconds. Then he improved almost regularly from competition to competition until he was soon among the world's best. In May he stayed below the 50-second mark for the first time, and in June he achieved his first Diamond League victory in Oslo . In Ostrava it increased to 48.94 s and at the Glasgow Grand Prix it ran with 48.69 s in second place and in the top ten of the world best of the year.

At the 2015 World Championships in Beijing , he again won the decathlon title. He improved his own world record with 9045 points, which earned him an additional bonus of 100,000  US dollars . The record was exceeded in 2018 by Frenchman Kevin Mayer with a performance of 9126 points at the Décastar in Talence.

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Eaton won the gold medal with a new Olympic record of 8,893 points ahead of Kevin Mayer and Canadian Damian Warner .

Eaton has been married to former Canadian heptathlete Brianne Theisen-Eaton since July 2013 .

At the beginning of 2017, he and his wife jointly announced their resignation. The reason given by Eaton was a lack of athletic goals.
