geography

Diamond Bar , Rowland Heights and Industry are south of Walnut and La Puente is west. Several small streams run south of the city towards the valley of the San Jose Brook, which flows west to the San Gabriel River .

history

The history of Walnut goes back to the Tongva Indians. The Spanish missionaries arriving in the 18th century called the Indians Gabrieleño , as they lived in the area administered by the Spanish Mission San Gabriel Arcángel . The Walnut area was one of the outlying ranches and kept cattle and sheep for the mission.

During the secularization , i.e. the Enlightenment and the secularization that went with it, in the 1830s, the areas controlled by the missions were divided into so-called ranchos , large settlement areas, which were assigned to wealthy men by the Spanish and later Mexican governments. The first ranch in the Walnuts region was Rancho San Jose , which was transferred to Ricardo Vejar and Ygnacio Palomares in 1837. Other ranchos were Rancho Los Nogales (1840 to Jose De La Cruz Linares) and Rancho La Puente (1842 to John Rowland and William Workman ). Rowland and Workman divided their territory in 1868, with Rowland receiving the eastern half and Workman the western half. Rowland's land included the western part of Walnut and the neighboring area of what is now the town of Rowland Heights . The area was mainly used for raising livestock and growing grain, grapes and fruit trees.

The first US Post Office opened in 1895 and was named "Lemon". Later, in 1908, the name was changed to "Walnut". As a reminder of the first few days, the US Post Office is on Lemon Avenue , one of the city's main streets.

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the United States' Declaration of Independence in 1976, the “Bicentennial Commission” selected the construction of “Lemon Creek Park” and the restoration of the “William R. Rowland Adobe Redwood Ranch House” as Walnuts projects for this anniversary. In 1872, the 120 km² Lemon Creek Park area became the property of Sherriff William Rowland, which he had inherited from his father, John Rowland. The modest property was built in 1883 as a house for Mr. Meridith, ranch foreman William Rowlands. The ranch house, built of adobe and redwood , is one of the few ranch houses in the region that has been preserved in this style. On October 1, 1975, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places .

Walnut, California is sometimes confused with the town of Walnut Creek in northern California.
