The San Gabriel Mission is a Spanish Franciscan mission near present-day San Gabriel in California . It was founded on September 8, 1771 , the feast day of the birth of the Virgin Mary . The mission was often called the "Godmother of the Pueblo de Los Angeles ". The Franciscan Padres, whose mission was to found the Mission, first chose a place on the banks of the Río de los Temblores (Eng .: Earthquake River , today Santa Ana River ). The choice finally fell on a fertile plain directly on the banks of the Rio Hondo in Whittier Narrows, east of what is now downtown Los Angeles. Between 1771 and 1834, the year of the mission's secularization , over 25,000 people were baptized there. Between 1862 and 1908 the mission church served as a parish church for the community of San Gabriel, only to be taken over and restored by Claretians . Since May 6, 1971, the San Gabriel Mission has been a listed building on the National Register of Historic Places .
