The facility is a registered National Historic Monument .

history

The Franciscan brother Junípero Serra met on June 1, 1770 together with his brother Juan Crespí in what is now Monterey with the Californian governor Gaspar de Portolà . As president of the Alta California Mission , he founded the San Carlos Borromeo Mission on June 3, 1770, named after the Archbishop of Milan, Charles Borromeo . This first location took the place of today's Cathedral of Karl Borromeo. Soon Serra wanted to separate the Indians from the Spanish soldiers after attacks and was looking for a better place to farm. The following year, the Mission moved to Carmel Valley in August and a new chapel was built there, consecrated at Christmas 1771. The food supply remained critical and was temporarily dependent on supplies from the San Antonio de Padua Mission and by ship from Mexico. Carmel served as the basis for Serra's establishment of eleven missions in California.

After Serra's death in 1784, Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen took over the leadership, who built nine more mission churches from this headquarters until his death in 1803. In Carmel he replaced the clay chapel with a stone structure. The San Borromeo Mission had grown to 927 natives by 1794, but had fallen to 381 again by 1823 due to disease.

After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, the monastery began to fall into disrepair and was finally secularized in 1834 and the land was divided into ranches. After California became part of the United States in 1861, the missions were returned to the Abraham Lincoln Church . The mission was secured by rebuilding the roof in 1884. Of all California missions, Carmel is the only one that still has its original bell tower , including the bell.

In 1962 the current parish church of Our Lady and St. Therese was given by Pope Johannes XXIII. awarded the rank of minor basilica. In 1987 Pope John Paul II visited the church. Junípero Serra, buried in the church, was canonized in 2015.
