The city does not have its own administration, so it is an unincorporated area and is listed in the statistics as a census designated place . It belongs to the Greater Los Angeles Area .

The city is located at the geographical coordinates of 33.98 ° north, 117.89 ° west. It's about 35 kilometers to downtown Los Angeles to the west.
Towns surrounding Rowland Heights are Walnut to the northeast, Diamond Bar to the east , Brea to the south, La Habra Heights to the southwest, Hacienda Heights to the west, and the town of Industry to the northwest.
history
In 1842, the American settlers John Rowland and William Workman were able to acquire land from the Mexican government, on which the ranch La Puente was built, the forerunner of today's city. Until the 1960s, the place was dominated by agriculture, the main products were walnuts , avocados and citrus fruits . In 1888 crude oil was discovered around the place , which was extracted for about 40 years. From around 1960, the place changed from an agricultural to a residential area, made possible by an expanded water supply and traffic development. From then about 4,500 inhabitants, the city grew to around 50,000 inhabitants today (2020).
