history

Brea is the Spanish word for pitch or bitumen found in the neighboring Carbon Canyon . In 1894 the Union Oil Company acquired 1,200 acres of land in the area and began oil production in 1898 . A significant development of the place did not begin until 1911, when the settlements of Olinda and Randolph were amalgamated under the name Brea and shops and smaller industrial companies were set up to meet the needs of the workers and their families. Brea was officially registered as a parish on February 23, 1917. At that time the place had 752 inhabitants.

Economy, transport, tourism

Oil production flourished until the 1940s. The importance of orange production declined in the 1950s. In the 1970s and 1980s, new residential, industrial and commercial areas as well as entertainment venues and the Brea Mall shopping center emerged . Nearby is the large landfill Olivia landfill .

The city is on California State Route 57 ( Orange Freeway ). Nearby is the Carbon Canyon Regional Park, which has recreational facilities and a population of sequoia redwood trees threatened by 2008 forest fires and drought.
