The Oregon Ducks are the sports teams of the University of Oregon in Eugene , Oregon . The Ducks play both college football and college basketball in the Pacific-12 Conference , a Division I FBS league. The Ducks are best known for their football and athletics program. The latter in particular helped the city of Eugene to become known as "Track Town, USA". The trials for the Olympic Games or World Championships take place there regularly . There are special rivalries with the Oregon State Beavers (against whom the so-called Civil Wars are waged) and the Washington Huskies .

American football

The University of Oregon has had a football team since 1893 and played its first official game in 1894 against Albany College. From 1919 the football team shared its training facility and field with the athletics team. In 1967 the Autzen Stadium was completed. In this stadium, which has almost 55,000 spectators, the football team's games have been played since then. In 1917 the Ducks won their first bowl, the Rose Bowl, against the University of Pennsylvania, under then head coach Hugo Bezdek. The Ducks have now been in the Rose Bowl four more times (1920, 1957, 1995 and most recently in 2010). In 2002, the Ducks also won the Fiesta Bowl against the Colorado Buffaloes .

In total, the Ducks won eight conference titles. The Pacific Coast Conference five times (1919, 1933, 1948 and 1957) and the Pac-10 Conference three times (1994, 2001, 2009). In 2000, the Ducks had to share the title with the Oregon State Beavers and the Washington Huskies. After the successful 1994 season, the then head coach Rich Brooks resigned and appointed his offensive coordinator Mike Belotti as his successor. Mike Belotti is the most successful coach in Oregon Ducks football history with a total of 116 wins. In 2009 he resigned and also appointed his offensive coordinator Chip Kelly as his successor. Chip Kelly started very successfully with 10: 3 wins, the Pac-10 Conference title and participation in the Rose Bowl (17:26 loss to Ohio State).

basketball

The Oregon Ducks basketball program does not have the same status nationally as the football or track and field programs. The greatest success dates back to 1939. The Ducks won the very first tournament of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship against Ohio State University with 46:33 . Head coach at this time was Howard Hobson , who made his team known under the nickname "The Tall Firs". In addition to other Pacific Coast Conference titles, the Ducks also won four Pac-12 titles in 2003, 2007, 2013 and 2016. In the 2006/07 season, the Ducks reached the elite eight of the NCAA tournament, but lost to the Florida Gators , the subsequent tournament winner. The Ducks play their home games in the 12,364-seat Matthew Knight Arena .

athletics

After some difficult years, Bill Hayward took over the athletics program as head coach in 1904 and stayed that way until 1947. In those 44 years, he not only built a very solid program for athletics, but also coached Daniel Kelly and Ralph Hill, who each won a silver medal at the Olympics won. In 1949, his deputy Bill Bowerman took over the post of head coach. Bill Bowerman became a legend as the head coach. He won several national championships and coached several All-Americans and Olympians. The most famous protégé was Steve Prefontaine, who later co-founded the Nike company and mainly brought the Olympic Trials and the NCAA championships to Eugene in Hayward Field . Steve Preforntaine trained in Eugene in the early 1970s. He held 13 American records and lost only three races in his own stadium and only once in the NCAA championship. In total, he won seven national titles during his career. Today the Prefontaine Classic is held every year in Hayward-Field . Bill Bowerman resigned in 1973 and his assistant Bill Dellinger became the new head coach.

The track and field program has won many NCAA titles across almost all disciplines and is the only division with NCAA titles for the Oregon Ducks alongside the basketball and football team. The success story of the program led to the nickname of the city of Eugene, "Track Town, USA".

baseball

The Oregon Ducks baseball team played their first game in 1877, a year after the university was founded. In 1981 the baseball program was discontinued for cost reasons, but was restarted in 2007 26 years later. The Ducks played their first game again in 2009. The current head coach is George Horten, who led Cal State Fullerton to an NCAA title in 2004.

Sports facilities

The Oregon Ducks sports facilities, especially the football complex, are among the best in American universities. The athletes have truly fantastic training opportunities here. The football complex is located to the north of the main university campus and includes the Autzen Stadium , where the Ducks play their home games. There is also the Len Casanova Center with the changing rooms, the weight rooms and other training facilities, as well as the indoor training field called the Moshofsky Center . Right next to the football complex is the PK Park, where the baseball team has been playing its games again since 2009. The basketball team, like the other indoor sports, plays in McArthur Court . This hall complex was built in 1926 and will soon be replaced by the new Matt Court arena . Finally, there is the legendary Hayward Field , which was originally built as a football stadium in 1919 and only got a cinder track in 1921. Today Hayward Field is the home of the athletics team. In addition, the NCAA title fights and the Olympic trials are regularly held there.

Rivalries

The Oregon Ducks mainly live the Oregon-internal rivalry against the Oregon State Beavers . This rivalry is called "Civil War". The football teams play the Platypus Trophy within this rivalry . The platypus is half duck (mascot of the Ducks) and half beaver (mascot of the Oregon State Beavers). The trophy itself was lost from 1962 to 2005. In addition to the rivalry with the Oregon State Beavers, the Ducks also have a rivalry against the Washington Huskies . This rivalry began in 1948 when the Ducks and California Golden Beavers shared the Pacific Coast Conference titles, and the Washington Huskies voted for the Golden Bears as Rose Bowl contestants. A few years later, attempts were made to remove Oregon, Oregon State, and Washington State from the Pac-10 Conference so that the Huskies could not exert influence. However, this failed.
