The Matthew Knight Arena is a multi-purpose hall on the campus of the University of Oregon (UO) in the US city of Eugene in the state of Oregon . In 2011 it replaced McArthur Court , which was inaugurated in 1926 . The NCAA - college basketball crews of the Oregon Ducks (men and women) in the Pacific-12 Conference use the hall for their home games.

history

The future event hall was established in December 2008 after the son of major donors Philip Knight , co-founder of the sporting goods supplier Nike Inc. named. Matthew Knight was killed in a diving accident in El Salvador in 2004 at the age of 34 . Construction work began on February 7, 2009. The design is the result of a collaboration between TVA Architects from Portland and Ellerbe Becket from Kansas City . Nearly two years later, on 13 January 2011, which was 227 million US dollars expensive new building with a basketball game of the men in front of a packed house with 12,364 fans between the Oregon Ducks and the USC Trojans opened. The Ducks won the game after losing six games.

The arena playing field has a special feature. It was designed by Tinker Hatfield , shoe designer at Nike. When you stand in the field, it gives the impression that you are standing in a dense fir forest . The parquet from Canadian maple named Kilkenny Floor after Pat Kilkenny, former sports director of the Oregon Ducks. The design is reminiscent of the basketball champion team of 1939 that the nickname The Tall Firs ( German  The tall pines ) bears. The video cube under the hall ceiling weighs 65,000 lbs. (approx. 29.5 t ) and has the dimensions 36 × 32 ft (10.97 × 9.75 m). It has four LED - screens with 20 x 12 ft (6.10 x 3.66 m) size. At the time of opening, it was the largest and most advanced video cube in a college gymnasium in the United States.

There are two large works of art in the building. The work Allegory by Janet Echelman consists of a fishnet- like sculpture and is located in the northeast corner of the hall. The second installation at the west entrance of Jason Bruges Studio is called Gameshow . The interactive artwork uses the motion capture technology , it is taken by cameras on the pitch the game, finished with a cut on software and on a 3D - liquid crystal -Wand from light yellow to dark green, the colors of the Ducks , are listed in stripes.

The event arena was certified in April 2013 by the US Green Building Council with the category Gold for ecological building .

In addition to the basketball games, concerts and family shows are occasionally held.
