The titles of 1928, 1939 and 2003 are controversial. After the 2003 season there was a split championship: the LSU Tigers with a 13-1 record and Sugar Bowl victory were favored by the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) and ESPN , while the USC Trojans with 12-1 and Rose Bowl win by Associated Press were seen up front.

Seven USC players to date have won the Heisman Trophy , an award given by the NCAA to the best college football player: Mike Garrett TB (1965), OJ Simpson TB (1968), Charles White TB (1979), Marcus Allen TB ( 1981), Carson Palmer QB (2002), Matt Leinart QB (2004) and Reggie Bush TB (2005).
