Ronald Mandel Lott (born May 8, 1959 in Albuquerque , New Mexico , USA ) is a former American football player. He played for the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL), with whom he won four Super Bowls .
Youth and college
Lott has played football and basketball since childhood . Since his father was a soldier, his parents moved him first to Washington, DC and then to Rialto , California , where he eventually went to high school . In high school, Lott played both defense and offense . In 1977 the scouts of the University of Southern California , Los Angeles noticed him. He received a scholarship and played in the defensive backfield with the USC Trojans . In contrast to many football players who aspire to a professional career and have prospects, he graduated in 1981 with a degree in constitutional law. In 1978 the Trojans were named national college champions of the United States (there is no final), in 1979 and 1980 he and his team each moved into the Rose Bowl . Both games were won.
Professional career
Lott was selected in the first round in 1981 in eighth place in the NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers . In the 49ers it was mainly used as safety . In the NFL he was famous and notorious for his massive tackles, he managed to get much heavier players off his feet again and again. His athleticism, his understanding of the game, the outstanding overview made him an exceptional player. He is often referred to as the defensive counterpart of Joe Montana , the great quarterback of the 49ers. Lott was tough not only against his opponents, but also against himself. In 1985, he smashed his little finger in a game against the Dallas Cowboys , which would normally have meant a lengthy injury break. Instead of having the injury treated surgically after the season, he had part of his finger amputated because he feared that he would be available too late for the new season.
Lott won the Super Bowl four times with the 49ers - Super Bowl XVI against the Cincinnati Bengals with 26:21, Super Bowl XIX against the Miami Dolphins with 38:16, Super Bowl XXIII again against the Bengals with 20:16 and Super Bowl XXIV against the Denver Broncos with 55:10.
Although he scored the most interceptions of all defenders in the league for the second time in 1991 (eight pieces), he was disappointed by the 49ers and received no new contract and then signed with the Los Angeles Raiders . In 1985 he had already managed to achieve the most interceptions in a season, he intercepted ten passes that year. In 1993 he left the Raiders for New York and played with the New York Jets based there until 1994 . Then he ended his career. The 1995 intention to compete for the Kansas City Chiefs , he no longer put into practice.
In 192 games during the regular season , Lott managed a total of 63 interceptions from which he was able to achieve five touchdowns . In the last of his four Super Bowl victories, he intercepted a pass and carried it 53 yards in the direction of the opposing end zone. The offense then did the rest and turned the defensive performance of their star defender into a touchdown.
