Hugh Edward McElhenny Jr. (* 31 December 1928 in Los Angeles , California ), nicknamed "The King" or "Hurryin Hugh" is a former American American football poker players on the position of the halfbacks . He played for the San Francisco 49ers , Minnesota Vikings , New York Giants and Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL).

youth

Hugh McElhenny was born the son of a vending machine in Los Angeles, where he also attended high school. His sporting achievements as a football player drew the attention of scouts from various colleges to him. He first attended the University of Southern California (USC) for three months . Since his foreign language skills were insufficient, he broke off his studies there and traveled with a friend through the USA by car. In 1948 he played for the team of a junior college to then accept the offered scholarship from the University of Washington .

Player career

Hugh McElhenny studied in Seattle from 1949 to 1951. He played as halfback for his college football team. In 1950, he scored five touchdowns in a single game . In 1951, he was voted All-American , scoring 17 touchdowns that season. For his athletic achievements, McElhenny was recognized by his college in all three years of study.

NFL

San Francisco 49ers

McElhenny was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in 1952 in the first round in ninth place in the NFL Draft . The 49ers paid him a salary of $ 7,000 . McElhenny, who was staged again and again by quarterback Y. A. Tittle and had an excellent fullback as a pre-blocker with Joe Perry , was able to achieve a running average of seven yards in his rookie year , which was an NFL annual high. In 1954 McElhenny could only play six games for the team from San Francisco due to a knee injury . Nevertheless, he managed a space gain of 515 yards and six touchdowns in the season.

In 1957 McElhenny managed to move into the NFL final with his team , where they were defeated by the Detroit Lions with 31:27. McElhenny was able to use a pass from Tittle for a touchdown in the game.

Minnesota Vikings

In 1961 Hugh McElhenny moved to the Minnesota Vikings trained by Norm Van Brocklin . From then on, Fran Tarkenton was responsible as quarterback for handing the ball to McElhenny. The Vikings team, however, was too weak to qualify for the final over the next two years.

New York Giants

In 1963 McElhenny signed a contract with the New York Giants , where he met YA Tittle again. With the Giants, he moved into his second final. However, his team could not prevail against the Chicago Bears and lost 14:10.

Detroit Lions and Retired

After a year with the Detroit Lions , where he was only used as a substitute, he ended his career after 143 games in the NFL. Hugh McElhenny was known for his explosive running style. Of his 58 touchdowns, he scored 38 through running play, he was able to use 20 passes from his quarterbacks for touchdowns.

Honors

Hugh McElhenny played six times in the Pro Bowl and was voted All-Pro five times . He is a member of the NFL 1950s All-Decade Team , the Pro Football Hall of Fame , the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame , the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame, and the College Football Hall of Fame . His jersey number 39 is no longer awarded by the 49ers.

According to the NFL

McElhenny worked in the civil service after his career. He was part of a group of investors who tried unsuccessfully to obtain franchise rights for the Seattle Seahawks . He is married and has two daughters.
