Richard James "Dick" Barwegan (born December 25, 1925 in Chicago , Illinois , † September 3, 1966 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American American football player . He played as a guard among other things for the Chicago Bears in the National Football League (NFL).

career

college

Barwegan graduated from Purdue University . In college he played American football for the Purdue Boilermakers . In 1943 he and his team won the championship in the Big Ten Conference . He then had to interrupt his studies during World War II due to his military service in the United States Army Air Corps . He could only take it up again in 1946 and played again for the Boilermakers, now supervised by Cecil Isbell . Barwegan has received three college awards for his athletic achievements.

As early as 1945 he was drawn by the Brooklyn Tigers in the draft in 44th place in the sixth round. For this team he never appeared, rather he joined the New York Yankees trained by Ray Flaherty in 1947 , who played in the NFL competitive league All-America Football Conference (AAFC). Barwegan was able to move into his first year in the AAFC with his team in the AAFC final, where they were defeated by the Cleveland Browns 14-3. The following year Richard Barwegan ran for the Baltimore Colts , which played in the same league on. The team's head coach was his former college coach Cecil Isbell. Isebell put Barwegan on the offensive line to protect quarterback Y. A. Tittle . After two unsuccessful seasons in Baltimore , he left the Colts for Chicago . For the Chicago Bears , trained by George Halas , he played three years to end his career after two more years of play with the Baltimore Colts, which were newly founded in 1953 . Barwegan died in 1966 and is buried in Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery in Long Green , Maryland.

Honors

Barwegan is a member of the NFL 1950s All-Decade Team . He played four times in the NFL Pro Bowl , the season finale game of the best players in a game round. He was elected all-pro three times in both the AAFC and the NFL .
