action

The American painter Geoffrey Carroll, who lives in London, meets Sally while on vacation in Scotland. They both fall in love, but end their relationship when Sally learns that Geoffrey is married. Geoffrey paints his wife as an "angel of death" and murders her with poisoned milk. He marries Sally and moves with his little daughter Beatrice to her in the country. But he is blackmailed by a pharmacist who knows about the murder of his first wife.

Geoffrey met Cecily Latham through a former admirer of Sally, Bruce Pennington, who made him advances. He decides to kill Sally. As with his first wife, he mixes poison in the milk and administers it to her for weeks. Your doctor, Dr. Tuttle, thinks the symptoms of intoxication are a nervous disease. When Sally talks to Beatrice about her mother's death, she notices parallels to herself. When she secretly goes into Geoffrey's studio, she sees his new picture, which shows her as the "Angel of Death". Now convinced that Geoffrey is a murderer, she calls her friend Pennigton and asks him for help. Shortly afterwards, Geoffrey returns home. He tries to strangle Sally, but is arrested by the police shortly afterwards.

Reviews

"Pseudo-psychological colossal film that draws its value from the performance of the main actor."

The film received rather poor reviews when it came out from Time Magazine and the London Times . Today the film is rated more positively.

background

The Two Mrs. Carrolls is based on a play by Martin Vale. Unusually for a film noir, the action takes place in rural England. The film was made after Dead Sleeping Firmly , but its release was delayed by two years - presumably because Bogart murdered his wife because of Alexis Smith in the conflict that was filmed shortly before . The director Peter Godfrey can be seen in a small supporting role as a tipster at horse races.
