Robert Yale "Buck" Lary (born November 24, 1930 in Fort Worth , Texas ; † May 12, 2017 there ) was an American American football player . He played among other things on the position of the safety with the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL).
Player career
College career
Lary attended high school in his hometown and played baseball and American football at Texas A&M University with the Texas A&M Aggies from 1950 to 1952 . In 1950 his football team won the Presidential Cup Bowl with 40:20 against the University of Georgia . Already in college he was used as a football player in various positions.
Professional career
In the 1952 NFL Draft , Lary was drawn in the third round in 34th place by the Lions. The team coached by Buddy Parker was a top team in the NFL in the 1950s. Numerous top players such as Pat Harder , Lou Creekmur and Jack Christiansen played in the ranks of the team. Lary was used in defense as a safety , but also as a punter and punt returner . He showed outstanding performance in all positions. Lary won the NFL championship three times . In his first year as a professional, the Cleveland Browns were beaten 17: 7, in 1953 the Browns were defeated again with 17:16, in 1957 there was another victory against the Browns - this time with 59:14.
Lary set numerous NFL season records. In 1959, 1961 and 1962 he was able to achieve the highest average of the season in the yards of all NFL punters. He played 11 game rounds in Detroit and was able to complete 133 games. Overall, he scored six touchdowns and intercepted 50 passes ( interceptions ).
In 1954 and 1955, Lary had to interrupt his career for two years due to his conscription to the US Army , but then returned to the Lions. After the 1964 season, he ended his career. Lary is one of the best punters and safetys in NFL history.
Off the field
From 1959 to 1963, Yale Lary was a Democratic MP in the Texas House of Representatives . He last lived in Fort Worth and found his final resting place there at the Greenwood Memorial Park and Mausoleum .
Honors
Lary played in nine Pro Bowls , the final game of the season's best players. He has been elected All Pro nine times and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame , the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, and the NFL 1950s All-Decade Team .
