Fletcher Joseph "Joe" Perry (born January 22, 1927 in Stephens , Arkansas , † April 25, 2011 in Tempe , Arizona ), nicknamed "The Jet" was an American American football player. He played in the National Football League (NFL) with the San Francisco 49ers as a fullback .

Player career

College career

Joe Perry visited in Los Angeles , the High School . He then played at Compton Junior College as a teammate of Hugh McElhenny American football. In 1945 he scored 22 touchdowns in the season . Before he could graduate from high school, he was drafted by the United States Navy and played there for a naval team, where he noticed a player from the San Francisco 49ers, who in turn informed the team about Perry.

Professional career

Dark-skinned Joe Perry received a professional contract from the 49ers in 1948. The team from San Francisco played in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC), a competitive league of the NFL. The team was coached by Buck Shaw , who used Perry as fullback in the team's offense . Already in his rookie year , Perry achieved a league year best with ten touchdowns through running play. In 1949 he was able to move into the AAFC final with his team, where however the Cleveland Browns were defeated by 21: 7. Perry had also set several AAFC annual records in this one. Due to financial problems, the AAFC stopped playing after this season and the 49ers were accepted into the NFL. 1952 committed the 49ers Hugh McElhenny, as his pre-blocker he acted from then on. Despite this task, Perry always got the opportunity to prove his skills as a ball-carrying player. In 1953 and 1954 he each gained over 1000 yards of space in one season. He unexpectedly lasted nine games and retired after that season.

Joe Perry held the NFL record with 9,723 yards of space gained in a professional career. He had clearly surpassed Steve Van Buren , who had held the record with 5860 yards. Perry's record was later broken by Jim Brown .

After the playing career

Joe Perry already worked as a radio presenter during his playing career. At times he worked as a scout for the 49ers and was a representative of Gallo Family Vineyards . The hobby bowling player Joe Perry also ran a bowling accessories store. Joe Perry was married with three children of their own and a stepdaughter. He lived in Chandler , Arizona with his wife before his death . Perry died on April 25, 2011 at the age of 84 from complications from his dementia . His body was cremated, the burial site is unknown. The family donated his brain for research at Boston University .

Honors

Joseph Perry played three times in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He was elected an All-Pro four times and an NFL MVP in 1954. Perry served on the NFL 1950s All-Decade Team , the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame .
