Robert Harold "Bobby" Walston (born October 17, 1928 in Columbus , Ohio , USA , † October 7, 1987 in Roselle , Illinois , USA) was an American American football player . He played in the National Football League as a wide receiver and place kicker for the Philadelphia Eagles .

Player career

College career

Bobby Walston studied at the University of Georgia from 1947 to 1950 . There he played American football as a wide receiver and placekicker for the Georgia Bulldogs . Walston moved into three bowl games with his team during his studies . His team couldn't win any of the games. Walston was able to achieve an average gain of space of 20.7 yards with his pass catches . This was a record in his college . It wasn't broken until 26 years later. Even so, Walston still ranks second on the Bulldogs leaderboard with his performance.

Professional career

Walston was 1951 by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 14 lap 166 point drafted . The team's coach was Wayne Millner , who gave up his post at the end of the 1951 season for health reasons. Walston succeeded in the offense of the Philadelphia team as a wide receiver , alongside his teammate Pete Pihos . He scored eight touchdowns in his rookie year . In addition, Walston was used as a placekicker in the special teams .

Robert Walston moved with his team, after a season with 10 wins from 12 games, in 1960 in the NFL championship game . Opponents were the Green Bay Packers trained by Vince Lombardi , who could be beaten 17:13. Walston was instrumental in the victory. He was able to utilize three passes from quarterback Norm Van Brocklin to a space gain of 38 yards. He also scored a field goal and two extra points .

After the 1962 season, Walston ended his career with the Eagles. Bobby Walston still holds numerous Eagles records today. With 881 points scored during a career, he is at the top of the list of the best. He also scored the most extra points for his team and has achieved the highest number of points on his team in nine years.

After the career

He was signed by the Chicago Bears . There he was responsible for personnel planning and worked as a scout for the team. He later moved to the United States Football League (USFL) in the same capacity . Bobby Walston died of heart failure in 1987 . He is buried in Mount Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst , Illinois.

Honors

Walston played twice in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He was voted All Pro once and is a member of the NFL 1950s All-Decade Team .
