Pro Bowl 2008 at Aloha Stadium

The Pro Bowl is the all-star game of the North American National Football League (NFL). It is officially called AFC-NFC Pro Bowl because the teams are put together according to the conference of the selected players, in the meantime from 2014 to 2016 the teams were put together in a draft. It took place as the last game of the season until 2009, usually a week after the Super Bowl , and since then in the week between the Conference Championship Games and the Super Bowl. From 1980 to 2009, the Pro Bowl was held annually at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu . From 2010 the Pro Bowl should no longer be assigned to Honolulu, but instead take place at different venues. The NFL withdrew from this idea after a game in Miami .

For players, coaches, referees and cheerleaders, it is honorable to be nominated to participate in the Pro Bowl. This increases the market value of the players.

history

An all-star game between the league's new champions and a national team was first added to the NFL schedule in January 1939 (at the end of the 1938 season). In the first game on Wrigley Field in Los Angeles, the New York Giants beat a selection team from all NFL teams (with a few players from the Los Angeles Bulldogs and the Hollywood Allstars ).

The NFL reformed the Pro Bowl in 1951, from now on it became a competition between two all-star teams of the individual leagues: "American" against "National" (1951–1953), "Eastern" against "Western" (1954– 1970) and since 1971 due to the merger of the NFL and AFL to form the NFL, analogous to the Super Bowl, a game of the " AFC " against the " NFC ".

The voting rights for the selection of the participating players are divided equally between the players, the coach and the public. Fans can take part in the Pro Bowl Ballot on the NFL website during the season.

The coaching staff (coaching staff) for the two Pro Bowl teams consisted of the staffs of the respective losing teams of the championship games, so to speak, the losers of the play-off semi-finals. By moving the Pro Bowl to the Sunday before the Super Bowl, it became clear in 2009 that the preparation time for the coaches was too short. A new regulation was therefore introduced in 2010. The selection coach was now the head coach of a team that had already been eliminated in the divisional play-offs (the "quarter-finals"). Since two teams are eliminated per conference in this round, the head coach whose team was more successful in the regular season will now be the selection trainer . If both teams have the same season balance, the play-off seeding list decides. Example: In the AFC, the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens were eliminated in the divisional play-offs in the 2010 season . The Patriots had a season record of 14: 2, the Ravens of 12: 4. So the Patriots' Head Coach, Bill Belichick , became the AFC Pro Bowl selection coach on January 30, 2011.

Rule differences

The Pro Bowl uses slightly different rules to make the game safer.

  • No motions or shifts of the offense line.
  • In every offense formation there must be a tight end and a running back .
  • Intentional grounding by the quarterback will not be penalized.
  • The defense always plays in the 4-3 system (four defensive linemen and three linebackers), cover 2 is allowed
  • Wide receivers may not be attacked after the snap ( bump-and-run ), unless the play begins within the last five yards before the end zone.
  • Attacks on the quarterback ( lightning bolt ) are not allowed.
  • In punt , field goal or point after touchdown (PAT) the kicking player may not be attacked.
  • There are no kickoffs , instead the ball is placed at the 25 yard line after each point is won and at the start of each quarter. There is also no free kick after a safety .
  • Two-minute warning in every quarter.
  • The play clock starts at 35 instead of 40 seconds.
  • The clock is stopped within the last 2 minutes of each quarter if the offense cannot gain space.
  • The roster consists of 44 players.
  • After incomplete passes, the clock starts again at the signal of the referee (only outside the last two minutes in the second quarter and the second overtime and outside the last 5 minutes in the fourth quarter and the fourth overtime).

criticism

At the beginning of the 2010s, the Pro Bowl came under heavy criticism from the media, fans and even the NFL itself. The criticism was shown, among other things, in the fact that the stadium was not sold out in the near past. In addition, many fans expressed criticism about the lack of commitment of the players. Another important reason was that from 2010 the Pro Bowl was no longer played after, but before the Super Bowl: The result was that those players who competed in the Super Bowl were excused from the Pro Bowl. This naturally contributed to the fact that many outstanding players no longer played in the Pro Bowl.

After whistles and expressions of displeasure from fans were heard after a few minutes at the Pro Bowl in 2012 due to the very poor commitment of the players, the commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell , even questioned the Pro Bowl itself:

"We're either going to have to improve the quality of what we're doing in the Pro Bowl or consider other changes or even considering eliminating the game if that's the kind of quality game we're going to provide."

“We either have to improve the quality of what we do at the Pro Bowl or think about other changes. We even have to think about abolishing the Pro Bowl if we continue to deliver games of this quality. "

After talks were held with the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA, players' union) following the Pro Bowl 2012 game , in which the union made it clear that the players would like to keep the game, a new concept was worked out together, which turns away from the system of the conference teams and is based on a draft from all selected players. The first edition of the Pro Bowl with the new system in 2014 was characterized by a combative appearance of the defenses and an exciting course of the game, so that those responsible were satisfied.

Another point of criticism is the voting system itself, in which a third of the Pro Bowl election is determined by the fans. This helps give players from popular big city teams a greater chance. Players from the Pro Football Hall of Fame , who despite outstanding performance were only elected to the Pro Bowl once, included Ray Nitschke of the Green Bay Packers and John Riggins , who managed his only nomination as a member of the New York Jets and during his Career high point with the Washington Redskins was never chosen.

Outfits

The procedure up to and including 2013 was as follows: The conference team that had won the Super Bowl the previous season was the home team. The traditional color of the NFC was blue, that of the AFC was red. Every Pro Bowl player wears his NFL team's helmet and has his team logo patch on the jersey. He wears the same jersey number as in his own team, although double numbers are allowed. Until 2009, the head coaches traditionally wore red or blue Hawaiian shirts .

Specialty

The term All Star is not officially used at the Pro Bowl by the NFL. The All-Star Game is actually the "American Football League All-Star Game" that was played until 1969 . Since the Pro Bowl is the selection game of the most popular / best players of a season, it is equivalent to an all-star game , as it is played, for example, in the MLB .

Pro Bowls (2014-2016)

The Pro Bowl was repeatedly criticized. On the one hand, because the players took it too easy with their attitude even for an all-star game, and on the other hand, because of the rule that the same number of players from the two conferences must be present in every position, not always the best were chosen. The NFL therefore revised the concept, and from the 2013 season to the 2015 season the teams were put together according to a new format. There were also slightly different rules of the game. The teams no longer competed in two conference teams (AFC versus NFC), but were selected by two Hall of Famers .
