Career highlights and awards

Phillip Martin Simms (* 3. November 1954 in Lebanon , Kentucky ) is a retired American American football player and played in the NFL quarterback for the New York Giants .

college

Simms grew up on a farm before his family moved to Louisville and attended high school there. He received a scholarship from Morehead State University and played for their team the Morehead State Eagles . The team is not one of the top college teams , so Simm's career was unspectacular. His 32 touchdowns faced 45 interceptions . Only in the yards he was able to convince with 5545 - this was a school record. Nevertheless, Simms was noticed by the professional scouts of the NFL.

Professional career

The coach of the San Francisco 49ers Bill Walsh planned the signing of Simms in the NFL Draft 1979 with the postponement of another young quarterback prospect - Joe Montana . However, they did not want to use an early draft pick for Simms and were therefore surprised when the Giants pulled him in seventh place in the first round, which met with a lot of incomprehension among the Giants' fans. Simm's career, who quickly received the nickname : "Prince Valliant" , was like his college career in the first few years - with little success. It was only in the third year of 1981 that the Giants - but without Simms, who was injured during the season - could move into the play-offs , but failed in the second game at the 49ers with 38:24. Due to another injury, Simms had to completely suspend the 1982 season. The Giants had exchanged their head coach Ray Perkins for Bill Parcells after this season . With him, the Giants were able to establish themselves as the top team and regularly moved into the play-offs. The signing of Parcells turned out to be unsatisfactory for Simms personally. One of Parcells' first measures was to put Simms on the bench in 1983 and to establish Scott Brunner , who had already replaced him during his injury, as starting quarterback . Due to another injury, Simms then had to watch the 1983 season almost completely from the stands.

In 1984, Simm's performance improved so much that he was able to make a significant contribution to the team's success in the years to come. 1984 and 1985 you failed in the play-offs at the eventual Super Bowl winners 49ers and Chicago Bears . In 1986 the great success followed. After defeating the Washington Redskins under coach Joe Gibbs with quarterback Jay Schroeder 17-0 in the NFC Championship Game , they also won Super Bowl XXI against the Denver Broncos (coach Dan Reeves , quarterback John Elway ) 39:20. Simms made three touchdown passes, 22 of his 25 passes could be caught.

Simms was less convincing through his individual successes, rather he decided the games with his game overview. Because of his lagging statistics compared to top quarterbacks like Joe Montana or John Elway, he was misunderstood by many during his career. Only recently - after his career - have his sporting successes been recognized.

It wasn't until 1989 that the Giants could move into play-offs again, but failed at the Los Angeles Rams in the first round. In 1990 the Giants were able to move into the Super Bowl again after defeating the 49ers 15:13 in the NFC Championship Game. In Super Bowl XXV there was a close win against the Buffalo Bills with 20:19 with coach Marv Levy and Jim Kelly on the position of quarterback. Due to injury, Simms, who had scored 15 touchdowns with only 4 interceptions in the current season, was unable to play in this game. The Giants offered Jeff Hostetler as starting quarterback, who had already replaced Simms in the play-offs and who also competed with Simms for the position of the regular quarterback in the next few years. 1993, Hostetler had meanwhile left the Giants, Simms was able to move into the play-offs again with his team, but where they were clearly defeated by the 49ers with 44: 3. Simms ended his career after this season. He played only for the New York City team in 15 seasons .

Honors

Simms played in two Pro Bowls , the season-end game of the best players of the season. In 1986 he became a Pro Bowl MVP and Super Bowl MVP . That year, along with teammate Lawrence Taylor , he became an all season MVP . His shirt number 11 is no longer awarded by the Giants, they also honor him on the New York Giants Ring of Honor . He is a member of the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame .

After the career

Simms works as a television presenter and broadcasts the NFL games on American television, including the Super Bowl XLIV . Simms repeatedly played himself in film and television shows. For example in the television series Elementary as the "best" knife thrower in the world or in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother .
