Harry Donald Carson (* 26. November 1953 in Florence , South Carolina ) is a former American American football poker players on the position of the inside- linebackers . He played from 1976 to 1988 for the New York Giants in the National Football League (NFL). Carson is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame .

College career

From 1972 to 1975 Carson played as a defensive end for the team at South Carolina State University under Willie Jeffries and was able to win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference twice in a row with his team. During that time, he became the first player to be named Best Defender of the Conference twice in a row and in 1975 All American. In 2002 he was named to the College Football Hall of Fame for his achievements .

NFL career

Carson was selected by the New York Giants in the fourth round of the NFL Draft in 1976 . Here he was used in the position of the linebacker. In his first season he was called up to the All-NFL rookie team. In 13 seasons, he managed to intercept eleven balls , conquer 14 fumbles and score a touchdown in the process. For ten years he led the Giants as team captain. In total, he was nominated nine times for the Pro Bowl and six times for the All Pro Team. Together with Carl Banks and Lawrence Taylor , he formed the central component of the defense of the New York Giants, who set several records under the nickname "The Big Blue Wrecking Crew". Under head coach Bill Parcells and defensive coordinator Bill Belichick he won after the 1986 season to the Super Bowl XXI . He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010 for his achievements .

Carson made the Gatorade Shower popular, with which he showered his Coach Parcells after every win in the 1986 season, including after winning Super Bowl XXI. This ritual, which has since become an integral part of every Super Bowl victory, earned him a lucrative advertising deal with Gatorade.

After the professional career

Carson worked as a sports commentator after retiring from active professional sports. He also runs his own company that offers advice and advertising in the field of sports. Together with Carl Banks and other former Giants teammates, he owned shares in the New Jersey Red Dogs , an Arena Football League team.

Carson has suffered the aftermath of numerous injuries since retiring from professional sports. He was diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome , which he attributes to more than 15 concussions. He was committed to ensuring that concussions and cranial trauma were recognized as the cause of the disease by the NFL and that players are better cared for after they have suffered concussions. He fears that he is suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy himself .
