Player career

Robustelli received an offer from the New York Giants , a Major League Baseball (MLB) club , after completing his studies in 1951 . However, the Giants planned to use him in a farm team, whereupon he decided to sign a contract with the Los Angeles Rams, which had drafted him in 1951 in the 19th round in 228th place . The late commitment initially gave him little hope of a long NFL career. However, he compensated for his physical disadvantages with his agility and speed. The trainer of the Rams Joe Stydahar therefore used him as a defensive end in the defense of the Rams. As a rookie , he was also able to win his first championship title in 1951. In the NFL final they were able to defeat the Cleveland Browns with 24:17. Robustelli was able to secure a fumble and carry the ball 22 yards towards the opposing end zone . Also in 1952 and 1955 Robustelli was able to move into the NFL final with the Rams, but both games were lost.

After the 1955 season, Robustelli was given over by the Rams to the New York Giants. Also in his first year with his new team he won the NFL championship under coach Jim Lee Howell . The Giants played in the NFL final against the Chicago Bears and won the game 47-7. In this championship game, too, he was able to contribute to the victory of his team with a fumble. By the end of his career in 1964, Robustelli was able to move into the final five times, but he was unable to win the title. During his career he was able to secure 22 fumble, which meant the career best of all NFL players.

After the career

In 1965 he commented on football games for the American television station NBC . He ran a travel agency and sports marketing company. In 1974 he returned to the New York Giants as a sports director. Due to permanent failure of the team, he resigned after the game round in 1978. Robustelli was married and had nine children. He died of complications from a bladder operation and is buried in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Darien , Connecticut.

Honors

Andy Robustelli played in the Pro Bowl seven times and was voted All-Star ten times . In 1962 he received the Bert Bell Award and in 1988 the Walter Camp Man of the Year . He is a member of the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame and has been a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame since 1971 . The New York Giants honor him on the New York Giants Ring of Honor .
