Thomas Franklin "Tommy" McDonald (* 26. July 1934 in Roy , New Mexico ; † 24. September 2018 in Audubon , Pennsylvania ) Nickname : Shoo-Fly , was a US American football poker players. He played as a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) with the Philadelphia Eagles , Dallas Cowboys , Los Angeles Rams and Atlanta Falcons, and the Cleveland Browns .

Tommy McDonald grew up on a farm in his hometown. His father was a sideline - farmer and electrician . As a sports fan, he promoted the athletic training of Tommy and his brother. In Roy high school , Tommy was supposed to play football, but his father did not consider him physically fit, Tommy was only 1.55 meters tall and weighed 45 kilograms, whereupon he was deferred by the football team for a year. However, the one year waiting period did not change his body size. McDonald's family moved to Albuquerque after that year , where he eventually went to high school. In addition to football, he played basketball there and won five state championships as a track and field athlete . As a wide receiver, he scored 157 points in his senior year, a record for the state. After graduating, he received football scholarships from both the University of New Mexico and Southern Methodist University . McDonald did not accept either offer. The University of Oklahoma basketball coach saw him at a New Mexico state selection game and gave the college football coach a lead. This invited McDonald and offered him a scholarship. McDonald accepted this offer.

Player career

College career

Thomas McDonald was 1.80 meters tall and weighed 77 kilograms when he began his college career in 1954. By the football team of the University of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Sooners , he was used as a halfback , but also as a wide receiver and quarterback . His team remained undefeated until the end of his studies. In 1955 and 1956, the Sooners won the NCAA championship . McDonald managed to get a touchdown in 20 of 21 games in both game years . This achievement earned him the choice of All-American . In 1955 he and his team won the Orange Bowl against the University of Maryland 20: 6. McDonald scored a touchdown for his team. He has received three college awards for his sporting achievements.

Professional career

Tommy McDonald was drafted 31st in the third round in 1957 by the Philadelphia Eagles . In his first year he was mainly used as a punt returner . 1958 Buck Shaw took over the coaching position with the Eagles and McDonald received more time as a wide receiver in the offense of the team and could be played again and again by quarterback Norm Van Brocklin . That year he achieved the NFL annual record of nine captured touchdown passes. During the 1960 Regular Season , the Eagles won ten of twelve games and moved into the NFL final with this record . In that final against the Green Bay Packers , McDonald became a key player. He caught three passes from Van Brocklin to a space gain of 90 yards and was able to contribute a touchdown to the 17:13 victory of his team. Van Brocklin ended his career after the final and was replaced by Sonny Jurgensen as quarterback. Although both players had a very good season in 1961, McDonald set the NFL annual record with 1144 yards of space gained by passing catches and 13 touchdowns and the Eagles were able to win ten of 14 games, the team was denied the title defense. In the game round 1962 he managed to gain space of 1146 yards with 58 pass catches, but the Eagles could not intervene in the title fight even with this top performance.

Before the 1964 season, McDonald was transferred to the Dallas Cowboys supervised by Tom Landry , who transferred him to the Los Angeles Rams after a year in Dallas . In 1965 he was able to draw attention to himself nationwide in Los Angeles and gain 1,036 yards of space by catching passports. In 1967 McDonald ran for one year for the Atlanta Falcons, only to end his career after the 1968 season after another season with the Cleveland Browns.

On the morning of September 24, 2018, Tommy McDonald died at the age of 84. His final resting place is not known.

Honors

Tommy McDonald played six times in the Pro Bowl , the season finale game of the year's best players. He was voted All Pro four times . He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame , the College Football Hall of Fame , Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame , the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, and the Orange Bowl Hall of Fame. The Philadelphia Eagles honor him in the Eagles Hall of Fame . In 1956 he received the Maxwell Award for the best college football player of the year.
