Henry Wendell Jordan (* 26. January 1935 in Emporia , Virginia , † 21st February 1977 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) was an American American football poker players and concert promoters . He played as a defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) with the Cleveland Browns and the Green Bay Packers .

Henry Jordan was born in Emporia. His family is of German - French - English - Indian descent. Henry Jordan's father worked on the railroad. He grew up with five siblings. Jordan initially did not have the physical requirements to play football. At the age of 14 he was asked by his gym teacher in high school to take part in football team training. Before that, he had only been active as a wrestler and athlete at the school. At the age of 16 he won the Virginia State Championship as a heavyweight wrestler . As a football player, he was also able to convince. The University of Virginia noticed him and offered him an athletic scholarship .

Player career

college

Henry Jordan studied at the University of Virginia from 1954 to 1957. For their football team , the Virginia Cavaliers, he ran up as a defensive tackle. In 1956 he won the heavyweight wrestling championship of the Atlantic Coast Conference , which also earned him qualification for the national college championship in 1957. He has received three college awards for his athletic achievements .

Professional career

In 1957 Jordan was selected by the Paul Brown coached Cleveland Browns in the fifth round as the 52nd player in the NFL Draft . He could not accept an invitation to the training camp by the Browns because he was set up for the college all-star game and was in the corresponding training camp. In preparation for this game, the Browns fired all rookies . Jordan was not affected by these layoffs due to his absence. The Browns were one of the top teams in the NFL with players like Lou Groza , Jim Brown or Ray Renfro and were able to move into the NFL final in 1957 and 1958 . Both games were lost for the Jordan team. In 1957 the Browns lost to the Detroit Lions at 14:59. The following year the New York Giants prevailed 10-0.

In 1959, Jordan joined the Green Bay Packers , whose new head coach , Vince Lombardi , had shown keen interest in his commitment. Lombardi managed to form a top team from one of the worst teams in the NFL. Together with the later members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame , Bart Starr , Ray Nitschke or Emlen Tunnell , Jordan became one of the key players in the Packers' defense . By the end of his career in 1969, he moved into the NFL final with the Packers a total of six times. He was able to win five of these finals with his team. After losing a final in 1960 to the Philadelphia Eagles , Jordan won the NFL championship with his team in 1961 and 1962 - in 1961 with a 37-0 win over the New York Giants and in 1961 with another victory over the Giants, this time with 16: 7. In 1965, Jordan moved into the final for the fourth time. His former Cleveland team lost to the Packers by 12:23.

In the years that followed, the Packers were the superior team in the NFL. In 1966, Jordan was able to win the NFL title game against the Dallas Cowboys with the team from Green Bay with 34:27. The victory meant moving into the AFL-NFL Championship Game , which was later renamed the Super Bowl . After the playing career

After his career, Henry Jordan became managing director of Summerfest , an annual music festival in Milwaukee , which had up to a million viewers. Numerous artists such as Sly & the Family Stone , Johnny Cash and The Doors performed at the festival under his direction . He died of a heart attack and is buried in La Belle Cemetery in Oconomowoc , Waukesha County , Wisconsin.

Honors

Henry Jordan played five Pro Bowl times, was elected All-Pro seven times , and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame , the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame , his college hall of fame , and the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame .
