Player career

College career

Dave Robinson was born in New Jersey, where he attended the High School as a basketball player was active and three times won the state championship. After graduating from high school, he studied civil engineering at Pennsylvania State University and played college football for the Penn State Nittany Lions from 1960 to 1962 as a defensive end and end . In 1961 Robinson and his team won the Gator Bowl against the Georgia Institute of Technology with a 30:15 win . In 1962 he and his team were beaten 17-7 by the University of Florida team in the Gator Bowl . Despite the defeat, he was named MVP after the game . In the same year, Robinson was voted All American . He received three awards from college for his athletic achievements.

Professional career

David Robinson was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the first round in 14th place in the NFL Draft in 1963 . The San Diego Chargers from the American Football League (AFL), a competitive league of the NFL, also drew him 17th in the AFL Draft in the third round. The Montreal Alouettes from the Canadian Football League (CFL) were also interested in signing Robinson . Robinson was about to sign a contract with the Chargers when he learned that they wanted to hand him over to the Buffalo Bills immediately after his engagement . Since the climatic conditions in Buffalo did not suit him, he decided to sign a contract with the Green Bay Packers supervised by Vince Lombardi . Lombardi used Robinson as a linebacker in the team's defense . The Packers were the reigning NFL champions and had numerous top players in their ranks. Robinson was only able to secure the regular position in 1964 and 1965.

In the third game year Robinson managed to win his first NFL title. The Packers played in the final against the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland team lost 23:12. The next two game years should end for Robinson with winning the NFL title. In 1966, Robinson's team beat the Dallas Cowboys 34:27 in the final . Robinson was instrumental in the victory of his team. Shortly before his own end zone, he forced the quarterback of the Cowboys, Don Meredith , to a momentous interception , which ultimately secured the lead of the Packers. After the 1967 regular season , the Cowboys were again losers in the NFL final, which would go down in football history as the Ice Bowl . Under the most adverse circumstances, the game was played at −25 degrees Celsius and the playing surface was covered with ice, the Packers were 17:14 behind until shortly before the end of the game. A few seconds later, Bart Starr surprisingly started a run with Jerry Kramer and Ken Bowman as pre-blockers and was able to carry the ball to the decisive touchdown in the end zone of the cowboys. Both games meant the entry into the AFL-NFL World Championship Game for Robinson's team . The championship game between the still separate leagues American Football League (AFL) and the NFL was later to be renamed the Super Bowl . In Super Bowl I , the Packers met the Kansas City Chiefs , who had to leave the field with a 35:10 defeat. A year later, the Oakland Raiders were defeated 33:14 in Super Bowl II . Robinson managed to secure a fumble in the game . After the second Super Bowl victory, Lombardi left the team from Wisconsin , which could then no longer continue the great achievements of previous years. Only in 1972 did Robinson succeed with the Packers again in the play-offs , where they failed early on, however, at the Washington Redskins . After two more years of playing with the Washington, DC team , Robinson ended his professional career.

After the playing career

Dave Robinson worked during his free time and after his playing career as an engineer at the Campbell Soup Company and Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company , before setting up his own sales company for brewery products in 1984. After he had partially withdrawn from the management of the company, he worked for a company that manufactures artificial turf. David Robinson is also a board member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame .

Honors

Robinson played three times in the Pro Bowl and was voted All Pro four times . He is a member of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame , College Football Hall of Fame , Gator Bowl Hall of Fame, and the NFL 1960s All-Decade Team . In 2013 he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame .
