The Campbell Soup Company is an American company in the food industry. It was founded in 1869 by the fruit dealer Joseph A. Campbell and the refrigerator manufacturer Abraham Anderson. The name was originally Joseph A. Campbell Preserve Company . The company produced long-life canned foods , mainly vegetables, soups and meat.

history

1896 Anderson left the company after Joseph Campbell & Co said. In 1897, the German-born John T. Dorrance, who had studied at the University of Göttingen , among other things , started working for the company as a food chemist . He developed a new process for making soup concentrates that only contained half as much water as before. Up until then, soup was not nearly as popular in the USA as it was in Europe. In 1898 the cans were given their characteristic red and white label for the first time. Campbell's ready-made soups, however, were a market success, also because of the low price of 10 cents per can. The product was presented at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and received a gold medal in recognition, which is still depicted on the cans today.

Campbell Soup invested in advertising campaigns from the beginning to promote the products. The company also published its own cookbooks with recipes for its own canned food.

The characteristic red and white logo of the brand also served Andy Warhol as inspiration for his famous "Campbell's Soup Cans," 32 images of Campbell soup cans of different flavors on canvas, which he in 1962 his first exhibition at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles denied . In 1996, Campbell's Soup Cans were sold to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City for $ 15 million.

1979 the company Eugen Lacroix was taken over. Today Lacroix is a well-known brand of Campbell. In 1996, the German company Erasco was also taken over , which today is continued as Campbell's Germany GmbH; the Erasco brand name is also used.

In 2006 the company had a total of 24,000 employees and sales of more than $ 7 billion.

In 2011 the number of employees had fallen to 17,500.

In 2013 Campbell announced its intention to sell its European business (Campbell Europe) to the financial investor CVC Capital Partners , based in Luxembourg . Campbell Europe achieved sales of around 400 million euros in 2012 and employed 1,300 people. The European business now operates as Continental Foods .

The company 's brands include Campbell's , Pace , Pepperidge Farm , Arnott's , V8 , and Swanson .

Around a third of the company's shares (as of 08/2018) still belong to the grandchildren of John T. Dorrance, Mrs. Mary Alice Malone and her brother Bennett Dorrance.
