Pepperidge Farm (colloquially for short "Pep Farm") is a US American trademark. The company of the same name was founded in 1937 by Margaret Rudkin .

development

After an article about Rudkins “bread de luxe” appeared in Reader's Digest in 1939 , orders came from all over the USA and Canada . In 1940 the bakery was moved from the garage to a former Norwalker auto store. After a short time, the company was baking 1,000 loaves of bread a week. Seven years later, the company moved again to a more suitable facility. The first branch was opened in Pennsylvania in 1949 and another in Illinois in 1953 . The company began television advertising in the 1950s . In the 1960s the product range was expanded, over 1,000 employees worked at Pepperidge Farm and the annual business was US $ 32 million.

In 1961 Rudkin sold the company for US $ 28 million. to the Campbell Soup Company . Since then, Pepperidge Farm has been one of the Group's brands. In 1966, Pepperidge Farm took over shares in the confectionery manufacturer Godiva before it was later fully taken over by the parent company.

In 2000, the Pepperidge Farm brand generated 12.3% (US $ 800 million) of Campbell Soup's sales, and in 2010 it was 19.5% (US $ 1.5 billion). In 2009 there were nine production sites.

Products manufactured under the brand are primarily biscuits, bread, dark chocolate and various other baked goods. These are mainly sold in the USA.

Trivia

In the cartoon series Family Guy , a nostalgic advertising spot of the brand is parodied, which refers to the long tradition of the company.

The still image of the corresponding scene became the well-known and widespread Internet meme "Pepperidge Farm remembers", in which, with sadness and sarcasm, - in the eye of the creator - desirable situations in the past that no longer correspond to the current norm are recalled.
