Joseph Donald Meredith (* 10. April 1938 in Mount Vernon , Franklin County , Texas ; † 5. December 2010 in Santa Fe , New Mexico ), nicknamed "Dandy Don", was an American American football poker players, sports presenter and television actors . He played as a quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football League (NFL).

career

college

Meredith attended high school in the town where he was born and already played American football there. He received a 1957 scholarship to Southern Methodist University in Dallas and ran between 1957 and 1959 as a starter on the position of quarterback for the Southern Methodist University Mustangs, the American football team of his college . He could not achieve a bowl game with his team, but his individual performances brought him in 1958 and 1959 in each case the nomination to All-American . 61% of his passports could be caught in college. He scored 14 touchdowns with his own running game and 25 with passes.

professional

Meredith was drawn in 1960 by the Chicago Bears in the NFL Draft at 32nd place in the third round and immediately passed on to the Dallas Cowboys, which were founded in 1960 as competition to the Dallas Texans . The Bears secured further draft rights for the future, which the cowboys had to give them in return for Meredith. The head coach of the Cowboys Tom Landry had been signed in the same year and had found in Meredith the quarterback who should lead his team for the next nine years. In the first two years of play, Meredith was initially the substitute for the experienced Eddie LeBaron . In 1962 he was able to oust LeBaron and became the team's starter.

In 1966 and 1967 Meredith was able to lead the team twice in the NFL Championship Game , where they were narrowly beaten by the Green Bay Packers - in 1966 with 34:27 and in 1967 in the so-called Ice Bowl with 21:17. Surprisingly, he announced his retirement in 1969.

Meredith still holds the club record for the longest touchdown pass with 95 yards.

Honors

Meredith played three times in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. In 1966 he received the Bert Bell Award . He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame , the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, and is immortalized on the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor . His shirt number is no longer given at his college.

After the career

Meredith worked as a sports host for the ABC and broadcast football games. He also worked as an actor and played mostly in television series.
