Donald Anthony Perkins , (born March 4, 1938 in Waterloo , Iowa , USA ) is a retired American football player . He played running back in the National Football League (NFL).

career

Perkins played American football at the University of New Mexico with the New Mexico Lobos from 1957 to 1959 . Already in college he attracted attention and was voted the best newcomer in the league. He also made it into the league's national team three times. In 1960 he was drawn by the Baltimore Colts in the ninth round in 106th place in the 1960 NFL Draft , but never appeared for the team from Baltimore . Shortly before the founding of the Dallas Cowboys , Perkins had signed a contract in Dallas . In return for compensation, the Colts waived him, Perkins could appear for the cowboys. From 1961 to 1968 he ran for the Cowboy 6,217 yards . In the cowboy record list, he ranks behind Emmitt Smith and Tony Dorsett . He got 42 touchdowns by runs and 3 touchdowns by passing catches. In 1967 he and his team made it into the NFL Championship Game . In the so-called Ice Bowl , however, you had to admit defeat to the Green Bay Packers 21:17 in the final. Perkins, who was used as a fullback in addition to being a halfback , ended his career in 1968.

Honors

Perkins played six times in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He was once voted All-Pro . In 1961, he won the NFL Rookie of the Year election . Perkins is immortalized on the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor . He has been a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame since 2006 .
