college

Roger Staubach, the son of a salesman, began his football career at a high school in Cincinnati. In 1962, he joined the American Navy Academy football team , the United States Naval Academy (Navy) in Annapolis , Maryland . Staubach saw football as an opportunity to get into university. During his time at university, however, he developed into one of the best college football quarterbacks of all time. In 1963 he was one of the youngest players of all time to receive the Heisman Trophy , the award for the best college player of his year. That year he won nine out of ten games with his team. In 1964, the Navy team lost the Cotton Bowl against the Texas University team with Staubach as quarterback. During his college days, 63% of Staubach's passes found their own teammate. His rate of passes intercepted by the enemy ( interceptions ) was vanishingly low.

Professional time

Staubach's ( nickname : Roger the Dodger or Captain Comeback ) professional career began with obstacles. In 1964 he was elected by the NFL team of the Dallas Cowboys in the ninth round in 129th place in the 1964 NFL Draft . But his career didn't begin until 1969 - at the age of 27 for a rookie . In the meantime, Staubach did his military service, for which he committed himself voluntarily. He was also used as a supply officer in Vietnam during the Vietnam War .

From 1969 to 1970 he was initially only used as a replacement quarterback by Craig Morton . In 1971 he made his breakthrough to regular quarterback in the current season and he was able to win Super Bowl VI against the Miami Dolphins 24: 3. Staubach was voted Super Bowl MVP , the best player of the game , in that game . He got two touchdowns . The game year 1972 brought a serious setback for the career of Staubach. Due to a serious shoulder injury, he was only used in four games and was replaced by Morton. However, this did not prevent him from intervening in the play-offs game of his team against the San Francisco 49ers . In the 30:28 win of his cowboys, he got two touchdown passes and a gain of 174 yards . With this performance he ousted Craig Morton again from the starting position .

In 1975 Staubach failed in Super Bowl X against the Pittsburgh Steelers with 21:17 to triumph in Super Bowl XII against the Denver Broncos with 27:10. Staubach threw a touchdown pass in this game. After a 35:31 defeat, again against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XIII , Staubach ended his career after the following season.

In his 11-year professional career, he scored 153 touchdowns from passing and 20 from his own runs during the regular season . There are also 19 touchdowns that Staubach scored during the play-offs. Staubach was known for his comeback qualities. Although his team was often only a few minutes behind the end of the game, he managed to turn the game in favor of his team. His coach Tom Landry called him the best combination of pitcher, athlete and leader the NFL has ever seen. 1973, 1978 and 1979 he was the best thrower of the respective NFL season. He was also known for his own runs, with which he repeatedly got into the opposing end zone. Roger Staubach ended his career with the then highest quarterback rating (83.4) in NFL history.

Honors

Staubach was elected a total of six times in the Pro Bowl , the season final game of the best players of the past season. In 1972 he was elected MVP of the Pro Bowl. He is a member of the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor , an honor the Cowboys give to particularly deserving players. He is also a member of the NFL all-start team of the 1970s , the College Football Hall of Fame and, since 1985, the Pro Football Hall of Fame of North American football. In 1971, Staubach was voted NFL Player Of The Year - the best player of the season. In 1971 he received the Bert Bell Award and in 1978 he received the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for his social commitment and his playful achievements . In 1999 he was voted one of the greatest football players of all time by the American newspaper "The Sporting News" . His shirt number 12 is no longer assigned by the college team of the Navy.

In November 2018, US President Donald Trump announced that he would be awarding Roger Staubach the Presidential Medal of Freedom .
