Calvin G. Hill (* 2. January 1947 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is a former American American football poker players. He played as a running back in the National Football League (NFL).

origin

Hill's father was a farmer and initially ran a farm in South Carolina . The von Hill family moved to Baltimore, where the father took a job as a construction worker. The family later moved to New York City where he attended high school . Although the family lived in modest circumstances, they tried to enable Hill to study at a college .

Player career

college

Hill graduated from Yale University in New Haven , Connecticut . It was initially intended that he will be used as a quarterback . Due to the competitive situation at college, he was used as a running back with the Yale Bulldogs in his first year . In addition to his football training, Hill did athletics and a degree in history.

NFL

Hill was selected in the first round in 24th place in the 1969 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys . In his first year, Hill was used as a starter by the Cowboys' head coach , Tom Landry . In 1971 Hill was able to move into the NFC Championship Game with his team . Opponents of the cowboys were the San Francisco 49ers . Hill managed a touchdown in the game and he made a decisive contribution to the 14-3 victory of his team. With the win, Hill and his team could move into the Super Bowl , which was won 24: 3 against the Miami Dolphins . The following year, Hill was the first running back of the Cowboys with 1036 yards to achieve more than 1000 yards of space in one year. In 1973 he managed to jump over this hurdle again with 1142 yards. After a detour to the World Football League (WFL), he joined the Washington Redskins in 1976 . From 1978 he played for four years with the Cleveland Browns . In 1981 he ended his career.

Sports official career

Immediately after his playing career, Hill started working in the Browns' office, dealing with the integration of players struggling with addiction problems . From 1987 to 1994 he was vice president of the Baltimore Orioles , a team from Major League Baseball (MLB). Then he tried - unsuccessfully - to establish a baseball team in Washington, DC together with investors . In 1997 he returned to the Cowboys and since then, together with his wife, has been looking after players who have come into conflict with the law.

In 1969 Hill was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year . He played in the Pro Bowl four times and was named All-Pro twice . He is a member of the Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame .

Off the field

Hill is the father of basketball player Grant Hill . In 1970, Yale University students formed an organization that operates a daycare and kindergarten in New Haven. Calvin Hill agreed to have this organization bear his name.
