Walter Benton "Walt" Garrison (born July 23, 1944 in Denton , Texas , USA ) is a former American American football player. He played as a fullback in the National Football League (NFL) with the Dallas Cowboys .

youth

Walt Garrison grew up in Lewisville , Texas. He attended high school there and played as a linebacker American football but was also active as a baseball player and basketball player. He also worked in a nut processing company. Its owner, Zan Burroughs, was impressed by Garrison and supported him in obtaining a scholarship to Oklahoma State University - Stillwater .

Player career

College career

In 1963, Walt Garrison moved to college , studied veterinary medicine, and played college football for the Oklahoma State Cowboys as a running back . In 1964 he was able to achieve a space gain of 730 yards, the best value in the Big Eight Conference , with which he was still above the performance of Gale Sayers , who played at the same time for the University of Kansas . His sporting achievements earned him various nominations for selection games.

Professional career

Walt Garrison was drawn 79th in the NFL Draft in the fifth round in 1966 by the Dallas Cowboys . In his first three years of play, Garrison was initially a substitute for Don Perkins and was mainly used in the special teams of the Cowboys as a kick returner . After Perkins ended his career in 1968, he was used in the offense of the team as a fullback. In the game year 1970 Garrison was able to win his first league title with his team. After a 14: 3 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game, in which he was able to achieve 14 runs to gain space of 51 yards and catch a pass from quarterback Roger Staubach , he was able to move into Super Bowl VI . In this game a 24-3 win against the Miami Dolphins succeeded . Garrison had contributed to this victory with a gain of 74 yards from 14 runs.

Walt Garrison played with the Cowboys until 1974 . He then ended his career.

Career as a rodeo rider

Garrison got approval from the Dallas Cowboys to work as a rodeo rider. However, Tom Landry insisted that he not do this activity immediately before a game. He therefore mainly worked as a rodeo rider after the end of the season. For his achievements as a rodeo rider, he was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2018 .

Honors

Walt Garrison played in a Pro Bowl , the season-end game of the best players in a game round. He is a member of the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame , the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, and the Oklahoma State Athletics Hall of Fame

After the career

Walt Garrison worked in the tobacco industry after his career . He founded his own entrepreneur, which produces barbecue sauces . He is socially committed. In 1988 he wrote his biography.
