David Monroe Dave Edwards (born December 14, 1939 in Columbia , Alabama , USA , † December 5, 2016 in Whitney , Texas ) was an American American football player. He played as a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) with the Dallas Cowboys .
Player career
Dave Edwards already played American football in high school , but was also active as a basketball player . In 1959 he joined Auburn University and played there as the offensive end and as the defensive end for the Auburn Tigers . In his senior year of college , he was elected to the league selection and participated in a selection game of the best college football players .
In 1962, Edwards was from the AFL settled Denver Broncos in the 25th round of 194 office drafted . However, he did not join the Denver team, but signed a contract as a free agent with the Dallas Cowboys, which were in the AFL's rival league, the NFL. In his first year of contract he was not used for disciplinary reasons, but was accepted into the team's practice squad .
In his second year with the team from Dallas Edwards was able to prevail in the team trained by Tom Landry as a starter on the position of linebacker. The defense of the Cowboys, with the later members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame such as Cliff Harris , Herb Adderley , Bob Lilly or Mel Renfro and other top players such as Chuck Howley , Jethro Pugh or Lee Roy Jordan developed into one of the best defensive formations in the league and went down in NFL history as Doomsday Defense .
In the 1970 season he and his team won the NFC Championship Game . His team failed in Super Bowl V at the Baltimore Colts , which were looked after by Don McCafferty , with 16:13.
The following year he won eleven of 14 games with the Cowboys in the regular season and thus moved into the play-offs . After a 14: 3 win over the San Francisco 49ers , his team managed a 24: 3 victory in Super Bowl VI against the Miami Dolphins, trained by Don Shula .
Under the leadership of quarterback Roger Staubach , Dave Edwards won his third NFC championship in 1975 . 37: 7 victory over the Los Angeles Rams , however, in the NFC Championship Game was followed by a 21:17 defeat by Chuck Noll supervised Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl X . Edwards retired after the game.
After the career
Dave Edwards worked after his career as a painter. In 1988 he was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame . He was married and had two children. He died of natural causes in 2016, his body was cremated and the ashes returned to the family.
