Gerald J. "Jerry" Tubbs (born January 23, 1935 in Throckmorton , Texas , USA , † June 13, 2012 in Dallas , Texas) was an American American football player and coach. He played as a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) with the Dallas Cowboys , Chicago Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers .

Player career

College career

Jerry Tubbs visited in the years 1950 to 1952 in Breckenridge , the High School . Even at school he was active as a football player. From 1954 to 1956 he studied at the University of Oklahoma and played there with Tommy McDonald in the offense of the Oklahoma Sooners College Football . After he in his rookie year game as a running back ran aground, he moved in 1955 to the Center position . The following year he also got playing time as a linebacker. With the Sooners he won the American college championship in 1955 and 1956 . In both game years, as well as in 1954, the team remained undefeated. In Jerry Tubbs' last year of study, the Sooners were also able to defeat the University of Maryland, College Park team 20: 6 in the Orange Bowl . In 1955 and 1956, Tubbs also received two individual awards when they were elected to the league. In addition, he was elected All American in 1956

Professional career

Jerry Tubbs was drafted tenth in the first round in 1957 by the Chicago Cardinals . His season in Chicago was unsuccessful, in the course of the game year 1958 he was given to the San Francisco 49ers. But his time in San Francisco was also unsuccessful. In 1960 he was signed by the Tom Landry- trained Dallas Cowboys, who were going into their first year of play. In the game year 1965 he also served as Landry's assistant coach and looked after the team's linebackers. With players like the two future members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Lee Roy Jordan and Chuck Howley , as well as Dave Edwards , the cowboys were excellently occupied in the linebacker positions. After the 1965 season, he ended his career and worked briefly for an insurance company in 1966 to return to the field for four games as a replacement for the injured Lee Roy Jordan. Due to a back injury, however, he had to end the season early. In the 1967 season Tubbs remained as a player-coach in the team, but received no time on the field. After that year, Tubbs was only active as an assistant coach with the Cowboys.

Coaching career

In the following playing years, the Cowboys should establish themselves as the top team in the NFL. Together with Ernie Stautner , who was engaged in 1966 , he further developed the defense of the cowboys. It should go down in NFL history as the Doomsday Defense . In 1970 , Tubbs won his first title in the National Football Conference (NFC) against the San Francisco 49ers. However, his team lost Super Bowl V to the Baltimore Colts . The following year, Jerry Tubbs won his second title in the NFC against the 49ers and his first Super Bowl against the Miami Dolphins

In the 1975 season , the third title in the NFC followed for Tubbs. The victory over the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC final was followed by a defeat in Super Bowl X against the Pittsburgh Steelers .

In 1977 Jerry Tubbs was able to win his second Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys. After a victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship Game, a victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XII followed .

In 1978 , Tubbs won his fifth title in the NFC. Again the Los Angeles Rams could be beaten in the NFC Championship Game. This win, however, faced a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XIII .

After 21 years as an assistant coach with the Dallas Cowboys, he ended his coaching career and ran his own ranch in Dallas from then on . He died in 2012. His final resting place is unknown.

Honors

Jerry Tubbs played once in the Pro Bowl and was once voted All Pro . He is a member of the Texas High School Sports Hall of Fame , the Big Country Athletics Hall of Fame , the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and, since 1996, the College Football Hall of Fame .
