Benny Barnes Jewell (* 3. March 1951 in Lufkin , Texas , USA ) is a former American American Football- players. Among other things, he played as a cornerback in the National Football League (NFL) with the Dallas Cowboys .

Player career

College career

Benny Barnes joined Contra Costa College after high school in 1969 , where he played college football as a linebacker . The following year he moved to Stanford University and played there for the Stanford Cardinals in the position of safety . In 1971 and 1972 he was able to win the Rose Bowl game with his team .

Professional career

In 1972 Barnes joined the Dallas Cowboys trained by Tom Landry . First he got playing time in the special teams of the Cowboys and temporarily acted as team captain of this part of the team. Under the leadership of quarterback Roger Staubach , Barnes won the NFC championship in 1975 . 37: 7 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship Game , however, was followed by a 21: 17 defeat by Chuck Noll supervised Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl X .

From the 1976 season, Barnes was able to assert himself after an injury to Mark Washington in the defense of the team , which was supervised by Ernie Stautner , as a starter on the position of a cornerback. After winning the NFC Championship with a 23-6 win over the Minnesota Vikings , a 37-7 win over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XII followed .

The following season Barnes failed after winning the NFC title again in Super Bowl XIII with 35:31 at the Pittsburgh Steelers. The outcome of the game was shaped by an alleged referee wrong decision. In the fourth quarter of the game, Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw threw a pass to wide receiver Lynn Swann . To get to the ball, it ran into Benny Barnes' back, causing both players to fall. To the surprise of many spectators, the referees decided in favor of Swann, which kept the Steelers in possession of the ball and ultimately left the pitch as the winners.

In 1980 , Barnes was sidelined for five games due to an injury. After that season he replaced Charlie Waters on the position of safety . In 1983 he was fired by the Dallas Cowboys and replaced by Bill Bates . His attempt to gain a foothold in the United States Football League in 1984 failed.
