Ernest Alfred Stautner (born April 20, 1925 in Prienzing (now Willmering ), Bavaria ; † February 16, 2006 in Carbondale , Colorado , born Ernst Alfred Stautner ) was a football player and coach. He held the position of defensive tackle from 1950 to 1963 with the Pittsburgh Steelers .

college

Stautner was born in Bavaria, but he and his family left Germany for America when he was three years old. There he served in the US Marine Corps before going to Boston College . During his four years of study, unusual for a college player, he was a regular for the Boston College Eagles from the start .

Professional player

He was voted 22nd in the 2nd round in 1950 by the Pittsburgh Steelers, a team of the NFL , and only played for this franchise until his retirement in 1963 . In 14 seasons (per season only 12th and 14th games were played in the regular season in the 50s ) he played 168 times for the Steelers in the regular season.

Although he never won a title, he was elected 9 times in the annual post-season Pro Bowl - the final game of the best players of the season. In 1957 he was elected MVP of the Pro Bowl. In 1969 he was finally inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame .

Trainer

He began his coaching career at Pittsburgh Steelers as an assistant to Buddy Parker . He was in charge of the Steelers' defensive line . At the Dallas Cowboys he was from 1966 to 1988 as assistant coach to Tom Landry . Initially, he also looked after the defensive line in Dallas before taking on responsibility for defense . With the team of the Cowboys he was able to win the Super Bowl twice, Super Bowl VI on January 16, 1972 against the Miami Dolphins with 24: 3, Super Bowl XII on January 15, 1978 against the Denver Broncos with 27:10. In Super Bowl X he failed with the Cowboys 21:17 against his old team from Pittsburgh , Super Bowl V against the Baltimore Colts and Super Bowl XIII again against the Steelers were lost. After two more posts as an assistant coach in the Arena Football League and the Denver Broncos, he retired after the 1994 season, but was persuaded to take over a coaching position in Europe. From 1995 to 1997 he worked as a trainer for the German NFL Europe team Frankfurt Galaxy . With this team he was able to win the World Bowl in Amsterdam against the Amsterdam Admirals in 1995 with 26:22 in front of 10,000 Frankfurt fans who traveled with them. In 1996 he failed in the World Bowl at the Scottish Claymores .

After the career

In 1998, just one year after his final departure from professional football, Ernie Stautner was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease . He died in 2006 and is buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Rowlett , Texas .

Honors

Ernie Stautner is the only German-born member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and has played a total of nine times in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He was elected All Pro ten times . His shirt number 70 is no longer awarded by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is also a member of the NFL 1950s All-Decade Team , the Pittsburgh Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the Boston College Varsity Club Athletic Hall of Fame . In 1995, he was named World League Coach of the Year after winning the World Bowl .
