John Lee "Johnny" Stallworth (born July 15, 1952 in Tuscaloosa , Alabama ) is a former American American football player . He played as a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) for the Pittsburgh Steelers .

origin

Stallworth grew up in the town of his birth with two brothers and a sister. He suffered from polio in his youth and it was expected that he would never be able to walk properly. Stallworth attended Tuscaloosa High School three years after the racial barriers were lifted there. Nevertheless, a mixed race football team managed to form. A year before graduation, Stallworth became team captain . In high school, however, Stallworth had to act as a running back against his will .

college

Like many students from Tuscaloosa who had ambitions to play football, Stallworth first attended the University of Alabama , but found no support from its coach Bear Bryant and therefore joined the Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University after a year , which only had a second-rate football team decreed. There he graduated in business administration and met his future wife. In addition, he succeeded through good performance in the football team, where he was able to play as a wide receiver and attract the attention of the NFL scouts .

Profile career

Stallworth was drawn 82nd in the fourth round of the 1974 draft by the Steelers. In 1974 the Steelers were able to sign numerous players who were later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame . In addition to Stallworth, wide receiver Lynn Swann , linebacker Jack Lambert and center Mike Webster were signed up. Other later members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, such as running back Franco Harris and quarterback Terry Bradshaw , have already played for the Pittsburgh team . The Steelers were able to establish themselves as the top team in the NFL.

Already in Stallworth's first year, the Steelers managed to move into the Super Bowl under head coach Chuck Noll . In Super Bowl IX , the Minnesota Vikings were defeated 16: 6. The following year, the Dallas Cowboys were beaten in Super Bowl X by 21:17. In Super Bowl XIII Stallworth could then draw special attention. In the game against the Cowboys he was able to catch three passes from Bradshaw and thereby achieve 115 yards of space and two touchdowns . Just by catching a pass, he was able to gain 75 yards of space and a touchdown. The Steelers managed to win the game 35:31. In the following year, Stallworth was able to convince again in Super Bowl XIV . Shortly after the start of the fourth third of the game, he was able to catch a pass over 73 yards from Bradshaw and carry it into the end zone for the decisive touchdown at 23:19 for the Steelers against the Los Angeles Rams . The game was ultimately won 31:19.

Overall, the Steelers failed with Stallworth twice in the AFC Championship Game and could not move into the Super Bowl.

After Stallworth had a bad year in 1983 due to an injury, he was able to convince again in 1984. He got 80 pass catches with a gain of space of 1395 yards and 11 touchdowns. Stallworth retired in 1987. His club-internal touchdown record was only broken in 2005 by Hines Ward .

Honors

Stallworth has been voted his team's Most Valuable Player (MVP) twice . He played in four Pro Bowls , was voted All Pro twice and has been a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame since 2002 .

Off the field

In 1986 Stallworth founded his own company. In the meantime, his company had 650 employees. In 2006 he retired from the management. Stallworth has been a co-owner of the Steelers since 2009. In addition to his business activities, he has a foundation and supports talented children. John Stallworth is married with two children.
