Career highlights and awards

LC Henderson Greenwood (born September 8, 1946 in Canton , Mississippi , USA , † September 29, 2013 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) was an American American football player. He played as a defensive end in the National Football League (NFL) for the Pittsburgh Steelers .

youth

LC Greenwood was born the son of a factory worker in Canton. He had eight younger siblings and attended high school in his hometown . There he played basketball and American football before he decided to limit himself to American football.

Player career

College career

LC Greenwood received a scholarship to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff after graduating from high school . There he played college football as a defensive end for the Golden Lions from 1966 to 1969

Professional career

In 1969 Chuck Noll had taken over the coaching position with the Pittsburgh Steelers . The Steelers had been one of the worst teams in the NFL in previous years. They drafted LC Greenwood in 1969 only in the tenth round in 238 place, but were able to commit Joe Greene an important building block for the future defense of the Steelers in the same year . Together with Greene and other players, such as Dwight White and Ernie Holmes, who could be signed in the next few years, the defensive line of the Pittsburgh team developed into an important part of the Steelers and went down in NFL history as the Steel Curtain .

Success did not be immediate for the Greenwood team, however. The team won only one of 14 games in 1969. The team's failure did not last long. In the next few years, numerous promising young players such as Jack Ham , Franco Harris , Lynn Swann , Mel Blount and John Stallworth were committed. The Steelers grew to be a top team in the NFL.

After Greenwood and his team were able to move into the play-offs in 1972 and 1973 , but did not receive championship honors, they achieved their first major success in 1974. The Steelers had the AFC Championship Game by John Madden supervised Oakland Raiders defeated with 24:13 and were therefore in the Super Bowl IX confiscated. Greewood was in the game against the Raiders their quarterback Ken Stabler behind the line of scrimmage once to case bring (sack) and thus contribute to the success of his team. He and his team then won the Super Bowl against the Minnesota Vikings 16-6 . In the game Greenwood managed to fend off three passes from opposing quarterback Fran Tarkenton . In the following year Greenwood managed to defend the title. In the AFC Championship Game the Raiders were defeated again, this time with 16:10. Opponents in the subsequent Super Bowl X were the Dallas Cowboys trained by Tom Landry , who had to admit defeat to the Steelers with 21:17. Greenwood managed the quarterback of the Cowboys to bring Roger Staubach down a total of four times behind the target line and thus contributed significantly to the victory of his team.

In the years that followed, the Steelers remained a top team in the NFL. 1978 LC Greenwood was able to win its third Super Bowl. The Steelers had to deal with the Houston Oilers in the AFC Championship Game , but they had no chance against the Greenwood team in their 34: 5 defeat. Greenwood was able to bring down the opposing quarterback behind the line-of-sight again twice in the game. His team met the Cowboys again in Super Bowl XIII . The defense to Greenwood and Joe Green managed in the game to keep the quarterback of the team from Dallas Roger Staubach under control until the middle of the fourth quarter of the game. Greene scored a sack against Staubach. Thanks to a strong performance by their quarterback Terry Bradshaw, the Steelers had led 35:17 by then and already looked like the sure winner. However, Staubach was able to throw two touchdown passes within a very short time , which in the end did not change the 35:31 defeat of his team. In 1979 LC Greenwood celebrated the fourth Super Bowl success. In the AFC championship game he met his team again on the Oilers, who had to leave the field with a 27:13 defeat. Again Greewood managed a sack. The Los Angeles Rams were the opponents in Super Bowl XIV this time and had to admit defeat to the Steelers with 31:19.

LC Greewood ended his playing career in 1981. With 73.5 sacks he is still in second place on the team's internal best list of the Steelers. His four sacks in Super Bowl X are still a record for a final.

Honors

Greenwood was elected six times in the Pro Bowl , the season finale game of the best players of the past season. He has also been voted All Pro six times and is in his college's hall of fame and the Black College Hall of Fame . The Pittsburgh Steelers added him to their All Time Team in 2007.

After the career

LC Greewood became a successful businessman after his career. He also worked as an actor in commercials. He was socially engaged in various organizations. He died of kidney failure in 2013 and was buried in Priestley Chapel MB Church Cemetery in Canton.
