College career

Arthur Shell also played football and basketball in college . He was used by his football team in the first two years of study as a center and as a defensive tackle . In the following two years he was also used as a tackle on the offensive line . Shell was elected three times in the league selection and was named All-American in 1967 .

Professional career

Art Shell was drafted 80th in the third round in 1968 by the Oakland Raiders . The trainer of the Raiders, John Rauch , put him as a rookie in the special teams of the Raiders. In 1968 Shell was able to move into the AFL final with the Raiders. The team was defeated by the New York Jets trained by Weeb Ewbank with 27:23. In 1969, John Madden took over as coach of the Raiders. Shell received first time as an offensive tackle in the offensive line of the team from Oakland . He was used next to guard Gene Upshaw on the left side of the offensive line. Together with center Jim Otto, both should have a decisive influence on the performance of the offense of the California team over the next few years .

Shell had in the Raiders offense, among other things, the task of protecting quarterback Daryle Lamonica from the attacks of the opposing defense . The team from Oakland remained a top team and moved into the AFL final for the third time in a row in 1969. Opponents were the Kansas City Chiefs supervised by Hank Stram , who got the upper hand with 17: 7. Shell and the Raiders were also denied entry into the Super Bowl in 1970, 1973, 1974 and 1975 . In the first AFC Championship Game they were defeated by the Baltimore Colts 27:17 in 1970 , the Miami Dolphins 27:10 in 1973 , the Pittsburgh Steelers 24:13 in 1974 and again in 1975 16:10.

Daryle Lamonica ended his career in the NFL in 1974. Ken Stabler , who had been under contract with the California team since 1970, ousted him from the position of starting quarterback in 1973 . Shell and Upshaw shared responsibility for protecting Stabler. The series of final defeats ended for Shell in 1976. The team had lost only one of 14 games in the regular season and moved into the play-offs with this result . Opponents in the divisional play-off game were the New England Patriots , who could be defeated with 24:21. In the AFC Championship Game, the team met again on the Chuck Noll supervised Steelers. Art Shell's team managed to take revenge for the previous two defeats in the final and won with 24: 7. Opponents in the subsequent Super Bowl XI were the Minnesota Vikings , who had to admit defeat to the team from Oakland with 32:14. Stabler also remained error-free in the play-offs due to the performance of his offensive line around Shell and Upshaw and threw four touchdown passes . In 1977 Shell and the Raiders were unable to defend their Super Bowl title. They faced the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game and left the field with a 20:17 defeat.

After the 1978 NFL season, Tom Flores took over as coach with the Raiders. Stabler, in turn, left the team in 1979 and was replaced by Jim Plunkett . With them, Art Shell celebrated his second Super Bowl victory in the 1980 NFL season. The team had won eleven of 16 games and thus moved into the wildcard game of the American Football Conference (AFC) against the Houston Oilers. The game ended with 27: 7 for the Raiders, who could also win the subsequent divisional play-off game against the Cleveland Browns with 14:12. In the AFC Championship Game, the Raiders met the San Diego Chargers and were able to hold their own in the game with 34:27. Dick Vermeil and his Philadelphia Eagles were the opponents of the Raiders in Super Bowl XV . The Raiders won the game 27:10. Shell's offensive line was also of particular importance in this final round. Plunkett threw eight touchdown passes, three of them in the Super Bowl, in three of his own interceptions .

Gene Upshaw retired after the game round in 1981, and Art Shell's playing career was drawing to a close. Due to injuries he was only able to play eight games in the 1982 season for the Raiders, who had meanwhile moved to Los Angeles . From 1983 he worked as an assistant coach for Flores with the Raiders.

Coaching career

Art Shell remained the Raiders' assistant coach until 1989. In 1983, his team was able to win the third Super Bowl with a 38: 9 win against the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XVIII . During the 1989 season he replaced Mike Shanahan as the team's head coach . He was the first black coach in the NFL. In the following season, Shell and his team moved into the AFC Championship Game after twelve wins from 16 games, where they clearly lost to the Buffalo Bills with 51: 3. After the Raiders were able to move into the play-offs in 1991 and 1993, they lost seven of 16 games in 1994 and failed in the main round. Shell was then fired by the owner of the Raiders, Al Davis . Shell then hired as an assistant coach to Marty Schottenheimer with the Kansas City Chiefs and joined the Atlanta Falcons as assistant to Dan Reeves in 1997 . In 2000 he moved to the management of the NFL, but before the 2006 season he accepted the Raiders' offer to work there again as head coach. Immediately after the season he was sacked again, his team had only won two of 16 games.

Honors

Arthur Shell played eight times in the Pro Bowl and was voted All-Pro seven times . He is a member of the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team , the Pro Football Hall of Fame , the South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame , the College Football Hall of Fame, and the Black College Football Hall of Fame. In 1990 he was named NFL Coach of the Year .
