Career highlights and awards

Lyle Martin Alzado (born April 3, 1949 in Brooklyn , New York City , † May 14, 1992 in Portland , Oregon ) was an American American football player and actor . He played, among other things, in the NFL for the Denver Broncos .

Life

Youth / college

Alzado first grew up in Brooklyn. At the age of 10, he moved to Long Island with his parents . There he attended high school and made the first steps in football. After finishing school, he attended Kilgore College in Kilgore , Texas , before joining Yankton College in Yankton , South Dakota . Yankton College did not have a high-class college football team, but Alzado's defensive end performance was so outstanding that the NFL scouts noticed him. Yankton College no longer exists, and there is now a prison on the college campus.

Professional career

Alzado had already been noticed by the Denver Broncos scouts through video analysis. In the 1971 NFL Draft , he was elected 79th in the fourth round. In 1974 he had his most successful season in Denver . He has scored 13 sacks and 80 tackles that season . 1975 Alzado moved to the position of defensive tackle . He has 91 tackles this season. In 1976 he suffered a serious knee injury on the first play of the season and was out for a long time. In 1977 Alzado returned to the sports field and played an excellent season (8 sacks, 80 tackles). He played for the Broncos until 1978, but then moved to the Cleveland Browns in 1979 due to contract difficulties . In 1981 he suffered various minor injuries and had personal difficulties. Since it was also too expensive for the Browns, it was given to the Los Angeles Raiders in exchange for draft rights . He continued his career there successfully, was voted NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 1982 for good performance - the best player of the season, who had already been written off as a player and successfully returned to the field. Alzado had to end his career at the end of the 1985 season due to an injury after a total of 196 games in the regular season and 97 scored sacks.

In 1978 he failed with his Broncos in Super Bowl XII against the Dallas Cowboys with 27:10. In 1983 he was with the Raiders under head coach Tom Flores to Super Bowl XVIII against the Washington Redskins with 38: win 9th

Alzado was feared by his opponents because of his tough style of play. Since he took off his helmet in a game against the New York Jets on the field and threw it at an opponent, the NFL introduced the Lyle Alzado Rule during his career , which made such behavior strictly criminal.

Honors

Alzado played in 1977 and 1980 in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He was also a member of the AFC All Star Team five times (elections for the All Star separately for AFC and NFC are no longer held in the NFL today!). In 1982 he was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year , in 1977 he was named AFL-AFC Defensive Player of the Year , the best defensive player in the AFC. In 2008, Alzado was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame .

actor

Alzado had his first film and TV appearances during his time as a football player in 1979. He played alongside actors such as Stacy Keach and Richard Dean Anderson . He played the lead role in the American TV series Learning the Ropes . The series was also shown in Germany. In the series he plays a teacher who also works as a wrestler , which he wants to keep a secret from his family.

death

After his career as a football player, Alzado admitted he was doping with anabolic steroids . He also provided his teammates with doping substances. In 1992 he died of a brain tumor - a disease that he himself attributed to his doping abuse. However, this fact is not medically proven. Lyle Alzado is buried in River View Cemetery in Portland , Oregon .
