occupation

Highwayman is an American action series starring Sam J. Jones . The series, which is set in the near future, was created by Glen A. Larson and Douglas Heyes . The pilot film (mostly broadcast as two series episodes in Germany) was presented on September 20, 1987 on US television at NBC and resulted in a short-lived series that consisted of only nine episodes. Some changes to the cast and format were made between the pilot and the series. The series has often been viewed by fans and critics as a cross between Mad Max and Knight Rider .

action

The pilot and the series are about a mysterious group of US marshals , the so-called "Highwaymen". Your job is to fight crime and prosecute bizarre phenomena. Each Highwayman has for this purpose a special high-tech - trucks with lots of special equipment.

The pilot featured the show's hero known only as "Highwayman" (or "Highway"). The viewer hardly learns anything about him or his past. Highway drives a computer-aided high-tech truck with a spherical driver's cab that actually belongs to a helicopter (an Aérospatiale SA 341/342 ). There is also a futuristic sports car in the hold . At the same time, his lover ( Claudia Christian ) and Mr. Toto ( Stanford Egi ) appeared, an oriental technical genius who invented a method to make the truck invisible. During the course of the film, Highway meets the unscrupulous Merrick, a car thief. He can only stop Merrick with the help of five outlaws.

After the pilot, only Highwayman and his truck returned to the series. Highwayman was no longer acting alone. At his side as a non-permanent partner and sidekick came Jetto, a somewhat unconventional Highwayman. He also got a boss named Tania Winthrop and DC Montana as technology specialists. Jetto got a truck from which a futuristic car could be separated.

It has never been clarified exactly who the Highwaymen report to. Obviously, they are beyond the police, but they also come into conflict with the local authorities. Though the organization bears similarities to the Knight Rider Law and Constitution Foundation , Highwayman's bosses seemed far more mysterious.

Although the series only ran for a very short time, it was shown successfully in France and Great Britain and also had a lot of fans in German-speaking countries.

The series ended after only nine episodes. There were a number of reasons against continuing. The ratings in the USA were not high enough to cover the high production costs. In addition, the concept of American television series changed from comic book adventures to more politically correct series in the 1990s.

synchronization

The German version was created by Rainer Brandt Filmproductions GmbH in the early 1990s and was shown on ProSieben from 1991 . The dialogue book was written by Rainer Brandt , who also directed the dialogue.

At the end of the 1980s, the pilot was first released dubbed on VHS cassette . Both dubbed versions come from Rainer Brandt Filmproductions GmbH.
