Howard Matthew Moses "Howie" Long (* 6. January 1960 in Somerville , Massachusetts ) is a former American American football poker players on the position of the defensive ends . He played 13 years for the Oakland / Los Angeles Raiders in the National Football League (NFL) and played a major role in his team's victory in Super Bowl XVIII . He was also elected to the Pro Bowl eight times and, after his playing career in 2000, to the Pro Football Hall of Fame .

After his playing career, he continued his career as an actor and presenter a. a. at Fox Sports Networks .

Football career

Long attended Villanova University , where he played college football from 1977 to 1980. In his freshman year he started in every game and scored 99 tackles . In his second year he led the team with five sacks and also scored 78 tackles again. In his third year he had to sit out three games due to an injury and was therefore only able to make 46 tackles. In his last year he led the statistics again with four sacks and was also able to add 84 tackles.

After the Oakland Raiders beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XV the year before , Long was selected in the 1981 NFL Draft by the Raiders in the second round in 48th place. Its combination of size, strength and speed made it a formidable weapon in the Raiders' defensive line. He was able to neutralize his opponents on the line of scrimmage and break through to the quarterback or the ball-bearing running back . He has achieved this ability u. a. by being considered one of the toughest players of the 1980s. His origins can serve as the reason for this, as he grew up in Charlestown , a rough working-class suburb of Boston , where young people openly discussed their differences on the street.

During his playing career Long was able to achieve 91.5 sacks (7.5 sacks are not official because the sack only became an official statistic from 1982 ). In 1986 he managed to achieve a total of 63 sacks with the defense of the Raiders, which made them top this statistic. Between 1983 and 1986, the Raiders defense could achieve a total of 249 sacks, which they had as many as the Chicago Bears at the time. The 1983 season Long and the Raiders could also conclude with Super Bowl XVIII . The entire running game of the Washington Redskins around John Riggins was limited to only 90 yards in the game . For his achievements as a player he was elected a total of eight times in the Pro Bowl .

When he retired after the 1993 season , he was the last player who still played with the Raiders in Oakland.

After the NFL career

After retiring from active sports, Long pursued an acting career primarily in action films . For example, he played the leading role in the film Firestorm - Burning Inferno and in the film Operation: Broken Arrow with John Travolta . In addition, he also appeared on TV in many television shows and commercials . He also began a career as a games analyst on television, hosting the pregame shows for the Sunday games for FOX .

In addition to his TV career, he also works as a book author. For example, he wrote the book Football for Dummies for the For Dummies series , with which he aims to bring the basics of professional football closer to the average football fan.
