Kyle Howard Long (born December 5, 1988 in Ivy , Virginia ) is a former American American football poker players on the position of offensive tackles and guards . He played for the Chicago Bears in the National Football League (NFL) from 2013 to 2019 and was elected to the Pro Bowl three times .

Career

Early years

While Kyle Long attended St. Anne's-Belfield School in Charlottesville , Virginia, he played both American football and baseball . In 2008 he was selected in the MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox in the 23rd round. However, he did not sign a contract and went to Florida State University .

College football

Long left Florida State University in January 2009 for academic reasons. After his performance slumped, he and his family decided it would be better if he could find a place closer to where he lived.

From 2010 he attended Saddleback College and began playing as a defensive end there. In his first season he achieved 16 tackles and one sack .

After he was transferred to the position of offensive guard in 2011, he decided on December 18 to play for the Oregon Ducks of the University of Oregon and moved to college.

In the 2012 season he started in ten of the twelve season games. He applied to the NCAA for permission to play college football for another year , but the NCAA declined his request.

National Football League

Long was selected by the Chicago Bears as the 20th player in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft . He was the first guard since 1960 that the Bears selected in the first round.

On May 17, 2013, Long signed his contract, becoming the last Bears drafted player to do so.

Long attended the Bears training camp from May 10th through May 12th. Due to a rule of the NFL, however, he had to skip a large part of the preparation. The rule states that rookies are not allowed to train until their class has graduated from college.

Long started on Matchday 1 in the game against the Cincinnati Bengals on the position of the right guards. He was the first rookie in the Super Bowl era to play the first game of the season for the Bears in this position as a starter.

In his first season, Long played all 16 season games from the start. He delivered good performances, which were recognized, among other things, with his Pro Bowl participation. Nonetheless, his team only achieved second place in the division with a score of 8: 8 and was unable to qualify for the play-offs with a wild card .

For the 2015 season, he moved from the position of guard to tackle.

On September 7, 2016, his contract was extended by four years.

After numerous injuries, Long announced his retirement on January 6, 2020.

Private

Kyle Long is the son of Hall of Famers Howie Long and the brother of Chris Long , who won the Super Bowl with both the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles .
