Michael "Mike" Singletary (born October 9, 1958 in Houston , Texas) is an American football coach and former player in the position of linebacker . He was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL) from 2008 to 2010 . Singletary became known when he was a major player in the league's most dominant defense in the mid-1980s . In 1985 the Chicago Bears did not allow more than 11 points per game. In the same season, the Bears won with a convincing defense performance against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX . In 1998, Singletary was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his services as a player . Prior to his professional career, he played football at Baylor University .

Career as a player in the NFL

Mike Singletary entered the NFL full of confidence. Even before the NFL draft , he told a Chicago Bears scout that if they hoped to draft him in the second round they'd forget about it. But it turned out differently. The Bears brought him to the team in the second round of the 1981 draft (as the 38th player in the draft). The first games ran Singletary as a replacement. Years later, he himself said: "This helped me to strengthen my leadership and my character". My trainer "saved me from myself". Mike Singletary's intense and intelligent style of play was soon rewarded when his trainer Buddy Ryan let him announce the moves. Singletary's efforts on the field and his manager in the dressing room earned him many honors: in his twelve-year career, he was invited to the Pro Bowl ten times , twice received the NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award , and once won the Super Bowl with the Bears . In 1998 Singletary was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame .

Career as a coach

"It is my belief that every young man, deep down, wants to be great - it is my conviction that every young man, deep in his heart, wants to be successful."

Back in 2002, Mike Singletary was in conversation as head coach for the football team at Baylor University , Singletary's former university, but to no avail. In 2003 Singletarys was hired as a linebacker trainer for the Baltimore Ravens . The following season he moved to San Francisco to the San Francisco 49ers to work there as an assistant and linebacker trainer.

2008

After former San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Nolan was fired in 2008, assistant coach Mike Singletary got his chance and was appointed interim coach. Already in the first game on October 30, 2008 against the Seattle Seahawks , Singletary was able to set accents and consolidate its claim to leadership in the team. Ten minutes from time he sent the 2006 first-round draft pick, tight end Vernon Davis , into the dressing room. Davis had hit an opponent, which was punished with a 15-yard penalty. In the post-game press conference, Singletary loudly commented on Davis how he would treat future players who only play for themselves and not for the team. "Cannot play with them. Cannot win with them, cannot coach with them, can't do it ". It was later reported that Singletary pulled down his pants during the halftime address to illustrate how bad the team was performing. A spokesman for the 49ers confirmed the report.

2009

In the game against the Atlanta Falcons in week 5, San Francisco lost 45:10. Frustrated by the poor performance, Mike Singletary yelled at his players. He later commented on his behavior like this: “I wish I had more coaching decency. But I haven't. I love my players, and when someone opposes my players in that particular way, I might do things that I shouldn't be doing. I have to get better at such things over time ”.

Singletary led the San Francisco 49ers to an even season in 2009 with eight wins and eight losses. The first since 2002 that didn't end negatively. Five players from the team were invited to the Pro Bowl : linebacker Patrick Willis , punter Andy Lee , tight end Vernon Davis , running back Frank Gore and defensive end Justin Smith .

Since 2010

After a disappointing season with five wins and ten losses, Singletary was sacked before the end of the season on December 26, 2010. The Minnesota Vikings signed him in the spring of 2011 as an assistant coach under head coach Leslie Frazier . Here he stayed until 2013. In the 2016 NFL season he was defensive assistant at the Los Angeles Rams . Since 2019 he has been Head Coach of the Memphis Express in the newly founded Alliance of American Football (AAF).
