Bruce Bernard Smith (* 18th June 1963 in Norfolk , Virginia ) is a former American American football poker players. He played in the National Football League (NFL) as a defensive end with the Buffalo Bills and the Washington Redskins .

Player career

College career

Bruce Smith studied from 1981 to 1984 at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University , where he also played American football. Due to numerous injuries, he received little time on his college football team in his freshman year . It was only in his second year of study that he was given more time and was able to establish himself as a starter . 1981 and 1984 Smith was able to move into bowl games with his team . The Independence Bowl 1984 could be won thereby. Smith scored 22 sacks in his penultimate year and 16 sacks in his senior year. In both playing years he was voted All-American . In 1984 he won the Outland Trophy . His jersey number is no longer given at his college .

Professional career

In 1985, Smith was drafted first by the Buffalo Bills in the first round . The Bills were one of the worst teams in the NFL. In his first year he became a regular player in the defense of the Bills. Two years later, Marv Levy became the team's new coach, and the Bills became a top team in the American Football Conference . By 1997, the Bills could move into the play-offs eight times . Smith played in the Super Bowl four times from 1990 to 1993 . None of the games could be won. In 1990 they just lost 20:19 in the Super Bowl XXV . Smith managed a safety and a sack against the Giants quarterback , Jeff Hostetler . In 1991 the Bills lost to the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXVI with 37:24. In 1992 the Super Bowl XXVII was lost to the Dallas Cowboys with 52:17. Smith was able to knock Troy Aikman , the Cowboys quarterback, down once. After the 1993 regular season , the Bills also lost their fourth Super Bowl. Again you drew a defeat against the Cowboys in Super Bowl XXVIII , this time with 30:13.

In 1991, Smith's career suffered a setback. Due to a knee injury, he missed numerous games of his team, but was still able to play the Super Bowl XXVI . In 2000, Smith moved to the Washington Redskins. A move into the play-offs he was no longer successful. After the 2003 season, Smith was fired from the Redskins. Due to injury, he had very little time this season, and the Redskins were the annual salary that would have been awarded to him if the notice had not been given, too high.

Smith ended his professional career at the age of 40. He played 279 games in the NFL, 267 times he was the starter of his team.

Honors

Smith was elected eleven times to the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He was elected all-pro eleven times . He is a member of the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team , the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team , the Buffalo Bill's 50th Anniversary Team (2009), as well as the College Football Hall of Fame since 2006 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame since 2009 . In 1990 and 1996, he was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year . Smith is honored on the Buffalo Bills Wall of Fame . Smith was able to score more than ten sacks in 13 rounds each, which, as well as the 200 sacks he made in his career, is an NFL record.
