Mykola Hawrylowytsch Schmatko ( Ukrainian Микола Гаврилович Шматько ; born August 17, 1943 in Krasnohoriwka in Donetsk Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian sculptor and painter .

Life

Mykola Schmatko lives and works in Ukraine. He has two sons with whom he works on a number of projects. During his creative career, he created more than 750 monuments (bas-reliefs, high-reliefs, sculptures) and 500 pictures without the support of the state or patrons. More than 70 sculptures made of Ural marble and 250 pictures (paintings and graphics) are exhibited in the "Schmatko & Sons" gallery. In 2000, Mykola Shmatko was appointed professor of the Department of Creativity and Art at the Moscow Institute of World Civilization.

In 2004, after long negotiations with the administration of the Donetsk region and the superior of the Svyatogorsk Lavra , Shmatko was commissioned to design the sculpture of the Svyatogorsk Mother of God and execute it in marble. Schmatko chiselled the 4.2 m high sculpture out of 2 blocks of Ural marble with a total weight of 40 t. In autumn 2004 the Lavra was reopened with the new sculpture after extensive restoration work. For his services, Shmatko was awarded the 3rd order of Nestor by Volodymyr , the Metropolitan of Kiev and the whole of Ukraine .

In autumn 2005 the Preobrazhenskaya Church in Keleberda , Poltava Oblast , was opened with the Schmatko sculpture of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
