Angelo Bortolo Bertelli (born June 18, 1921 in West Springfield , Massachusetts , † June 26, 1999 in Clifton , New Jersey ) was an American football player .

He played halfback and later quarterback for the University of Notre Dame team in college football from 1941 to 1943, and received the Heisman Trophy for best player in 1943 , although he was his last due to his draft for military service with the United States Marine Corps Year in Notre Dame only participated in six of the ten season games. In the history of the Fighting Irish , which also won the national championship in the same year, he was the first Heisman winner. Even Johnny Lujack , the quarterback position occupied in the team of Notre Dame for the rest of the season in 1943, was awarded the Heisman Trophy 1947th

Angelo Bertelli was signed in the 1944 NFL Draft as number 1 by the Boston Yanks , for which he never played a game. Instead he played for the Los Angeles Dons in 1946 and for the Chicago Rockets in 1947/1948 before a knee injury led to the end of his professional career. In the following years he worked as an assistant trainer at Yale University in 1951/1952 and then ran a beverage chain. In addition, he coached junior teams and worked from 1956 to 1967 as a radio commentator on football games at Princeton University .

In 1972, Angelo Bertelli was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame .
