The Chicago Rockets were an American football team that played in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) from 1946 to 1949 . The team was based in Chicago , Illinois , and played the home games at Soldier Field .

founding

In 1944, the AAFC was launched as a competitive league for the National Football League. The league was founded by a sports journalist from Chicago , who was able to gather numerous investors interested in football. The league awarded a total of eight franchises . A franchise went to Chicago. This city was a difficult market as the Rockets faced stiff competition there with the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cardinals . The league started playing in 1946.

successes

The game year 1946 was chaotic for the Rockets. The team was looked after by a total of five coaches . Although the team in Elroy Hirsch had an outstanding wide receiver in their ranks, it had nothing to do with the outcome of the championship. The team won only five out of 14 games. In 1947, the previous managing director of the AAFC Jim Crowley took over as coach. He lost all ten games and was replaced by Hampton Pool , who still managed to win. The next season brought the same result. There was only one victory against the Baltimore Colts trained by Cecil Isbell . In 1949, Ray Flaherty was appointed as the new coach. The Rockets had since been renamed the Chicago Hornets. Flaherty achieved four wins in 12 games. The chronically unsuccessful team stopped playing in 1949 after the AAFC went bankrupt.
