Alexander Douglas 'Alex' Smith (* 7. May 1984 in Bremerton , Washington ) is an American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He has played for the Washington Football Team in the National Football League (NFL) since January 2018 .

NFL
San Francisco 49ers
Smith was selected as the first player in the 2005 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers . He prevailed against Aaron Rodgers, who was also traded as the first pick for San Francisco. As a rookie , he was used in nine games, seven times as a starting quarterback .
In the 2006 season, Smith played as starting quarterback in all games. After the 2006 season he was often weak and had to struggle with several minor injuries, which is why he lost his place in the starting line-up to Shaun Hill and JT O'Sullivan in the following years .
At the end of the 2009 season , the quarterback under coach Mike Singletary made it back to the first team despite numerous rumors of exchange and was able to consolidate his place with solid performances.
In the 2011 season , Smith led the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship Game , in which they lost to the New York Giants in extra time.
