Steven Joseph "Steve" Bartkowski (born November 12, 1952 in Des Moines , Iowa ) is an American former American football player in the position of quarterback . He played most of his career with the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL .

college

Bartkowski went to the University of California, Berkeley . In his senior year he threw 2580 yards and scored twelve touchdowns on seven interceptions . That year Bartkowski was voted All-American .

NFL

Bartkowski was selected as the first player in the 1975 NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons . He was named Rookie of the Year in his first season by the US sports magazine The Sporting News . Bartkowski is one of ten quarterbacks in the NFL who threw more than 30 touchdowns in two consecutive seasons ( 1980 and 1981 ). In both years Bartkowski was nominated for the Pro Bowl . In the 1983 season it had a passer rating of 97.6. In 1985 he played for the first five weeks before injuring himself. After Matchday 8, he was placed on the Injured Reserve List , but sacked in November. In mid-December 1985, the Washington Redskins signed Bartkowski as the third quarterback for the last two games of the season. By 1995 he was the first player who managed to achieve three touchdowns per game for his team in five consecutive home games. Bartkowski holds almost every passing franchise record with the Atlanta Falcons, but on December 30, 2013, Matt Ryan overtook him in the thrown yards.
